Default Need All Opinions !!!!

i have a 1999 FRC, Fixed Roof Coupe, 6 speed manual, my steering column lock..locked up on me on my on april 11, 2006..... on April 19, 2006, the dealership .. performed the recall (4006D).

I thought all was well until .. this tuesday day may 2, 2006, when after work, the DIC read "pull key wait 10 seconds !!!!! " Dredd words. Then .. it read service column lock. !!!!! i was stuck and had to have the car towed yet again.

Now i was able to turn the wheel but the car shut itself off.

My question is the dealer is saying the problem lies with some part called the (actuator), which is in the steering column.... and not the steer column lock ??? They want $475.00 to fix it/ and put in a new Actuator.. Does this sound right or even make sense ??? Secondly has this happened to anyone else ???

Lastly if i put in the column lock bypass the $50.00 unit, would that then negate the use of the actuator entirely, and thus saving me alot of money ????

PS. Thanks for all your help, and all input is welcome !!

You bet! The CLB will bypass the actuator. You won't even hear the noise that it makes when you pull the key out.

sorry to hear of your trouble

1- GM should pay for this because they should warranty their work at least 1 year, and especially since this is a recall

lastly- unfortunatley since your column is already locked, the CLB will not work until your column is unlocked again... and if the dealer does the most recent recall correclty on your six speed, they should be removing the locking plate all together and getting rid of the programming that shuts your fuel off.

good luck

Make sure they performed the correct recall. Sounds like they did the old one on your car. Tell them to take their $475 actuator and jam it. Get the CLB, install it in under an hour and you'll be good to go!

Same thing happened to me. The GM Tech Center told the dealership to pull out the relay installed with the recall, then replace the actuator with a late 2004 actuator, which was done at NO CHARGE, per GM.

Your dealership needs to call the GM Tech Center, as GM had already done hundreds of the actuators when mine was done.

wow .. they made it sound like the actuator . or whatever was a separate entity from the steering column .................

Therefore GM should, if need be fix the actuator, per recall, no charge.

let me know if i am mistaken.

thanks agains.

The actuator is the motor assembly that drives the locking pin into the locking plate. It also sends an OK signal to the BCM computer when the locking pin is retracted so that fuel is NOT shut off.

So, it is an integral part of the column lock system, and is yet ANOTHER part that can fail in the system. The dealership should know that and you should NOT be charged.

The person at the dealership I went to is a member here, RichieRichZ06, and posted publicly that he would assist others on this issue, even if they are not in his immediate geographical area. Your dealership can probably contact him, if necessary. He's at Woodard Chevrolet in Fairfield.

Send him a PM. He is a great guy.

FWIW, he also sells GM Parts at a discount if you need any.

Taking your car to the dealer for this is mistake #1
Allowing them to reflash your PMC to turn off the fuel is mistake #2
A column lock bypass for 50 dollars fixes all of this, but for those with a reflashed PCM, your troubles may never be over.

Just got call back from dealer said bcm is not working in sync with my power mirror and my colum lock..I am like WTF.Said it would be a $600 -$1500 to fix.Dealer said it has nothing to do with the recall.Damn I am pissed.I am going to go tow my car back to my shop right now get the CLB and be on my way.Sad when the public knows how to fix this easier than GM techs..I only whish I had read this forum 3 days ago.
