Need All Opinions !!!!

I thought all was well until .. this tuesday day may 2, 2006, when after work, the DIC read "pull key wait 10 seconds !!!!! " Dredd words. Then .. it read service column lock. !!!!! i was stuck and had to have the car towed yet again.
Now i was able to turn the wheel but the car shut itself off.
My question is the dealer is saying the problem lies with some part called the (actuator), which is in the steering column.... and not the steer column lock ??? They want $475.00 to fix it/ and put in a new Actuator.. Does this sound right or even make sense ??? Secondly has this happened to anyone else ???
Lastly if i put in the column lock bypass the $50.00 unit, would that then negate the use of the actuator entirely, and thus saving me alot of money ????
PS. Thanks for all your help, and all input is welcome !!

i am getting my stomach back a little now ....

thanks for all your help
and of course more opinions are welcome here !!!!
should GM pay for any of this ???
ie towing it to the dealer .. renting a brand new 2006 toyota corolla with 20 miles on it ! ... .etc ..

1- GM should pay for this because they should warranty their work at least 1 year, and especially since this is a recall
lastly- unfortunatley since your column is already locked, the CLB will not work until your column is unlocked again... and if the dealer does the most recent recall correclty on your six speed, they should be removing the locking plate all together and getting rid of the programming that shuts your fuel off.
good luck

Make sure they performed the correct recall. Sounds like they did the old one on your car. Tell them to take their $475 actuator and jam it. Get the CLB, install it in under an hour and you'll be good to go!

many thanks to all .. and if anyone else has any more input that is welcome too !!!
they told me the preformed the recall bulletin 4006D the newest one .. i am assuming there have been A-D.
oh and my steering column does work does work, but the engine shuts it self off.
so i shall put in th CLB...

Your dealership needs to call the GM Tech Center, as GM had already done hundreds of the actuators when mine was done.

Therefore GM should, if need be fix the actuator, per recall, no charge.
let me know if i am mistaken.
thanks agains.

So, it is an integral part of the column lock system, and is yet ANOTHER part that can fail in the system. The dealership should know that and you should NOT be charged.
The person at the dealership I went to is a member here, RichieRichZ06, and posted publicly that he would assist others on this issue, even if they are not in his immediate geographical area. Your dealership can probably contact him, if necessary. He's at Woodard Chevrolet in Fairfield.
Send him a PM. He is a great guy.
FWIW, he also sells GM Parts at a discount if you need any.

this is such a pain .... GM is like . yeah lets take all the vette owners for a ride.
This should not be happening... how could techs and superviors be soo blantanly out of the lope with problems effecting theirs cars !! ..
something should be done !!
i am thinking PRODUCT LIABILITY .. we should all get in on a huge class action lawsuit !!!

Allowing them to reflash your PMC to turn off the fuel is mistake #2
A column lock bypass for 50 dollars fixes all of this, but for those with a reflashed PCM, your troubles may never be over.
