Last night it hailed, not too big and only for about 5 min. Now before I get fussed at about the car not being in the garage ---- My hobby is stained glass and hot glass - which I do in my 1 car garage. No room for my boy. So, until Jon builds my new house , my boy is stuck in the driveway.
I don't see any damage but boy did I have a heart attack last night. Would a cover help? Or is that just another can of worms -- scratches?

A cover would help. We've been getting a lot of hail here recently. What saved my DD is some moving pads. I ran out in a storm and threw them on the car. The rain water instantly soaked them and made them stick to the car. The hail did no damage at all.
Just know its kind of hard to dent fiberglass (I know...its not really fiberglass, but its close to it)... if anything it would be the paint that would be subject to abuse.

Yup, I talked to a Chevy salesman one time that told me once in a big storm they didn't get all the vettes off the uncovered lot before the storm hit and one of the windshields got shattered by the hail, but there was no dents on any of the vettes.
Paint will still take a beating though.

I'm a bit surprised that the moving pads stuck with the winds that we got. By my eyeball estimate, it probably gusted to 50mph in my part of town, and I know other parts of town were hit worse.
Some car covers are much thicker than others. The thick ones will help deflect hail damage to a point, but once the hail gets big enough, it will do damage.
Damn., CG. Frankly, I have had great luck with my C5 Wolf Car Cover for outdoor storage when not in my garage through heavy rain and hail. Ecklers carries this brand (great car cover warranty). CG, you might look into it. Good luck to you!
get a good quality cover around 200 dollars that has the elastic fittings to keep it on.
If it's baby hail like pea sized the car will be fine. When you get the nasty rock candy hail the cover definitely is a good thing to have. Even if you think that vettes will be fine, when you see that jagged nasty ice hit the car, it can scratch and chip your paint. When I got my 98 the first thing I bought was a cover and I didn't skimp. Get the ones designed for outdoor use that don't mold/mildew or stick to the paint. It's about 3-4mils thick, a textured gray design. Not sure if its covercraft or not but it's about a 200 dollar cover. Figure what a panel costs to reshoot vs a cover, its money well spent.
Get a car capsule then you don't have to worry about hail, rain, or kids!
I've had one for 5 years now and store one of my C5's in it. Just drive the car on, zip it up and turn it on. Takes about 4 minutes to fill with air and then your baby is protected from mother nature. It is the GREATEST car cover you can buy. I think I figured out that it uses next to nothing of electricity a month to run.
