Default Spray on black outs?

So I've had a few buddies get popped for having black outs on there cars. since our town is retarded. But my question is: has anyone tried The VHT spray on blackouts? I Am going to be a brave soul and try as long as I don't here alot of bad things about it. they are supposed to by black until you step on the brakes and then they are very transparent. when stepping on the brakes you shouldn't even tell they are black. So I think I could get out of a ticket if it is something permanent and not removable. It should not have any visibility issues with the brakes applied either. let me know what you think

Never used VHT, but I figured out the ratio of House of Kolor Jet Black to their Pro Flo Clear. 6 parts clear to 1 part black, three coats and then 2 more coats of clear.

Tail lights, 3rd brake light, back-up lights and license plate trim.

thats looks great! I think I'll give it a try. If it works out, Everyone else can have an example and save some green since this only cost $12.99.

So you're gonna try VHT? I've heard VHT doesn't look very glossy. If you don't like the look, you can always sand them down and take 'em to a paint shop. PM me for more info on all the steps required to paint them with auto paint if you end up going that route.

Let us know how the VHT turns out. If you paint them with auto paint, I cant imagine the lights will show thru very well. That stuff is thick.

ive dont it to my rear side markers and it takes some work. Be patient. Prepping the surface is key. Also thin, thin coats. Use like a 1000 grit sand paper and I also applyed a clear coat to help thicken it up a bit and add a layer to help protect it. it rather scratch the clear than scratch the blacout and have to redo it all

I've had great results with it in the past. Like the gentleman said above, prepping is key for proper adhesion. The VHT by itself looked a little flat to me, so I went over it with two coats of gloss clear coat...came out perfect.

The clear paint has ~16% black. Very translucent. More light shows through my lights than the black covers allow.

I painted 12 sets of lights for another C5 owners, Billy182 being one of my more noteable customers and a feature article in a magazine even mentioned the painted lens.

Trust me, lights that appear gloss black look really sweet.

Cool!

It sounds like ou have some good advice for a DIY version that'll look 1st class.

A couple extra tips that should work with VHT too.

Wask the lights with Dawn dish soap before you sand them.

Sand off the raised letters.

Make sure they are really smooth via 800 or 1000 grit paper.

If you can find and auto paint supply store, pick up a few tack rags to wipe the lights off with just before you paint.

Wet down the floor before you paint.

Thin coats with a flash dry time in between.

Good luck. Post your results too.

i just used a duplicolor clear coat. Also you dont want the surface too smooth. You want the paint to stick to something. I used 400 wet sanded and went to town. Dont worry about orange peel once you start adding the layers. Thats what wet sanding is for. Trust me, to do a good job, it'll take you a few days to paint, wait to dry, paint, dry, sand, paint, paint, sand, clear, clear, clear and final sand adn polish. Im not sure if you can see it well but here are my tinted side markers

Good luck and remember be patient. Dont rush it or you will be sanding off the paint and starting over like I did.

Duplicolor clear is what used. As you can see from DPG's results, it comes out great. With the VHT, I didn't have any issues with orange peel, so I applied two coats, then went right to two coats of clear with no wet sanding involved. Albeit, DPG's side markers look like they were definitely worth the extra work.

So how well do the lights show through with the VHT and clear? I really like how they look, but concerned that the brake lights will not show thru. So can you see the brake lights during the day?

chris, the lights (especially brake lights) show very well through the VHT.

Jetspeedz, unless there are laws stating that the LENSES need to red (which there may well be), you shouldn't get a ticket, because the reflection from the lenses do remain completely red.
