If you bought a brand new 68 Vette, you didn't have a 3rd generation or a C3, you had a 'new' Vette. So beginning 1968, you had a 3rd design of the Corvette. The old style Vettes - the solid axles - 53-62 (without independent rear suspension), mid-years 63-67 and the new Mako Sharks 68-82 (named for the coke-bottle shaped shark influenced GM Design Car of the 60's). When the 84 came out, they needed a new designation, which is where we got the C# designations.

There are other nicknames for certain years, like the 63 - split window coupe, 74 - split tail or 73 - soft nose.

So what you're saying is it's a different "style" but not a different "generation"?
Or are you saying it is a different "generation" but that term hadnt been coined yet?
I may still be confused.

Also it was the generation that lasted through only the middle years of a decade, thus the "mid-year."

The '67 with a 427 is the most sought after and is considered to be the last Vette. Even today.

If you think some of the people who own the C5 think GM went the wrong way with the C6, you should have seen what the owners of the mid-years thought when the 68 shark hit the street.

The 68 shark was well received by the junior crowd. Guess it worked because sales really soared.

Also the mid-years were the shortest run of all generations of Corvettes - 5 years. It was also the only generation of Vettes that did not span a decade. Many think this was the best looking generation, and the mid-years are among the most valuable and sought after. Lots of things that we think of on Corvettes, like hidden headlamps, independent rear suspension, disc brakes all around, big displacement high horsepower engines, etc. were introduced on the mid years. Also - the first Z06 was a model designation on the '63 and the '64.

As much as I love my C5 - I would die for a '67 3x black small block roadster.

Thats pretty much what happened. In the 70's you never heard the term "C3".

The generations are marked when the designers went to the boards and designed a whole new car, or totally re-bodied the Vette (as in the 68). Argueably, there's little difference in the 63 frame and suspension and the 68.

The 84 (83) was a total re-design as was the 97 model. If you go back to the 50's, Corvette got a new look in 56 and the rear was new for 60, but they're still considered the same generation.

The C6 has been called the C5.5 by most owners (except maybe C6 owners ). Marketing plays a bigger role in sales than ever. So, GM wants us to believe its a whole new car - and they're mostly right. The C6 may only look like a refinement of the C5 design, but it it much more. The more I learn about the C6, the more I like.

I don't know how they made the new ZO6 communicate telepathically and give me a inner mantra of "buy me, you know you want me", but they did.
