We all started at that point. You've gotten some excellent advice here. A few things I would reiterate:

1. Find a local Corvette club or other sports car club. Many good things will come of this: first, you'll meet a bunch of great people, second, you'll have someone to at the least give you some encouragement about doing general maintenance.
2. Get a set of shop manuals. You can find them on Ebay for roughly $100. Sounds expensive (especially to a college grad, Congrats! ) but one of the best investments for any car you own
3. Work safe. Jackstands, eye protection, work gloves, etc. Doesn't take a lot of money, but always err on the side of conservatism.

You'll find that there's really not much that's not doable on these cars.

BTW, if you buy a new car, don't think all these gremlins go away. That's another reason to learn how to repair your own cars.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

How many miles do you have on your car? I just bought a 99 with 80k and the previous owner purchased an almost bumper to bumper $0 deductable extended warranty from AAA and it cost him ~ $2200 for 3 additional years or 36k additional miles. I think you could probably get that for your car and it would at least limit your exposure to repair costs. Also, I think it would increase the resale value since it can be transferred. Plus, I saw they take payments!

My advice is learn to work on your cars! I am not the most handy person, I work as a computer programmer, but I love working on cars and though I wasn't very good at it initally, I can do a lot of repairs now. Plus, chicks dig guys who are handy. It has been kinda expensive to acquire tools, so that is a good reason to start early and get them bits at a time. Instead of buying repair manuals, I just subscribe to alldatadiy.com which is a full repair manual on the computer. They just had a deal where it was $30 for a 5 year subscription (for one vehicle). Joining the car club is good advice. If you meet other people who can work on cars, they will probably be willing to help you Also, you might look into taking some auto repair courses at a local community college after you graduate (although I'm sure you're tired of taking classes!)

I guess ultimately the question is what do you want to do over the next few years. The vette is definitely a more expensive car to keep and maintain then a honda civic (fuel, synthetic oil changes, etc.). Is that where you want to spend your money? It sounds like some of the repairs you've had done so far *could* have been held off in a worse case scenario, like the passenger side window motor. I am 25 and I just got this vette, I've been wanting one for years, but I decided it was more important to get a house first. That's just me though.

Another thing to consider, I doubt a dealer is going to give you 20k trade in on your vette, especially with the current problems. You said your car books @ 20k, is that private, retail, or trade in? I would think it would be more like 18k trade in.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do. Congrats on the upcoming graduation. What's your degree in?

-Jeff

BTW, ya might want to "read" the forum rules with respect to calling others idiots or other selective deragatory nouns.
I have given and received a tremendous amount of help from this forum. I have had people to my home on several occasions to drive/see/hear my vette and would do it again in a heartbeat. I have asked stupid questions, and even at my age continue to make plenty of mistakes. In my opinion he is abusing the privilege of a college education. A college education that I am sure mommy and daddy are paying for, just like the vette. This, oops I almost called him it again, is in for a rude awakening as he enters the real world. I was just trying to help him along the way into the adult world.
No apologies here.

So what does the fact that you have given and received a tremendous amount of help on this forum have to do with you calling members derogatory names and hijacking a thread? You could have at least offered some of your "tremendous help" to the kid before ridiculing his grammar...give the kid a break.

My opinion is to sell the car, get something a little more reliable unless you want to learn some basic mechanical skills. There are many members here that are willing to help you through some of the repairs and not give you grammar lessons. Good luck!

Steve-most kids today learn how to write and spell by having the computer automatically do this for them. Sadly, spell check is not available for posts on the forum. On the flip side people often just quickly post on the forum without worrying about spelling and grammar. Having just put 3 daughters through college I can honestly say they seem to be able to do it when necessary. Hopefully, this is merely a sign of youth and not really lack of knowledge.

Strike 1:

Your opinion of him abusing the privilege of a college education has absolutley nothing to do with what he's asking

Strike 2:

Not only do you not offer him advice on the topic but you call him an idiot

Strike 3:

You arent even man enough yourself to admit you are wrong when someone points it out to you (quote: "no apologies here")

Sounds like you missed or skipped a few classes (courtesy 101, Introduction to Arrogance maybe?) during your own education

He has also been a taxpayer during his stint with the car. If he knows, or learns, how to make money he is OK in my book

wow alot of great advice thanks all

i have always wanted to learn about my car, i wasnt planning on doing anything for the next month or so, so i think i shall buy one of those manuals and take a look at the problems and the engine then go from there :P. the flipside to that problem is i dont have any tools for a car whatosever, but if i stay in town here i know people that would let me bum their stuff whenever i needd it.

anyhow, i live in phoenix, i love it here and want to stay.. my degree is in cg art, "3d animation" "computer art" whatever you want to call it, the goal is to work on art for movies, computer games, tv whatever works.

and in response to the guy that doesnt approve of my 'grammar' i more or less assume everyone will take his stance when viewing my posts, why? because its simple common sense that popular culture seems to overlook - things like punctiation, capitalization, and correct spelling for the most part is completely superfluous. communication is about relaying information to one person to another, if the size of The First Letter Of Each Word Is That Important To Your Ability To Understand What I Am Writing Then, i am sorry i am confusing you. not to mention this little artcile pretty much proves that to correct a mistype is a waste of everyones time

http://www.simplebits.com/notebook/2...ssed_wdors.htm

the link apparently wont work for some reason so heres the paragraph from the page

"Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Amzanig huh?"

anyhow, its ok, i dont take offense to people like that it is a youth thing like jd's c5 says, when nessicary i can write just fine, infact i love writing and when i get more finicialy sound i may consider taking up writing as a hobby and/or income generator. old people tend to do what they are told and be stuck in their ways, young people tend to ask, why? this is dumb, why am i doing this, and do stuff their own way.

which brings me to this situation, instead of living paycheck to paycheck like my parents do off a very nice income being months away from debt, i am in this situation because i am persuing finacial freedom, and my goal is to have work optional by the age of 40 and wasting alot of money on my car would hender this. so to presume i am an idiot based on something as minute as me not wanting to proof read a informal post lest people will judge my intellegence over meaningless things, then i dont know what this world is coming to . how many kids do you know that are willing to give up a corvette to drive some crappy 15000 rice, only because they want to be finicialy responsible? further more how many of you, specificaly the guys who are hatin' on my grammar, work as an option? rather then living paycheck to paycheck?

anyways thanks for the advice again everyone. ill look further into things and post again when i get more questions/views/or get closer to making a decision

Interesting article. "Semes to be ture." Good luck on the work optional by 40. That was my goal as well. Didn't make it. My advice would be to not let that goal get in the way of enjoying life.

I'm not going to say, "Owned" because that phrase rates just as high in the stupidity category as "Oh Snap" (yep.. I read that particular thread in OT).

Since you have demonstrated a working knowledge of reading and writing (Hooked on Phonics? ) I'm trusting that you will put it to good use when you purchase your manual and start working on your ride.

I have found that when doing a DIY repair/mod, that a simple post here on C5 general can clarify the issue and help tremendously when I come to a head-scratcher of a problem.

Now, go buy a set of tools, get to work, and fix on your own what the stealership over charges for.

P.S. If my grammar errs on the side of incorrect.... I could care less.

Having two kids just graduate from college. I feel qualified to comment on your response. If your kid can't write and you spent 30 grand on one year of college. Lets just say thats the pot calling the kettle black!

I have a college education. And I'm not perfect. But my college education and/or human experience never gave me the right to be rude and disrespectful to people.
Tell you a little something: I would rather misspell words than be an a-hole to people.

Lighten up, dude!!
