Have you tried to resync the fob? After a battery change sometimes it is necessary to do this. Hold the lock and unlock buttons down for 7 seconds and the horn should beep. Otherwise, a drop could result in any of the components coming loose or breaking a solder joint. If you can get a look with a magnifying glass or microscope you might be able to determine what broke. Without a look it is really hard to diagnose. You can buy a new one but remember you should get a 2000 specific remote. Here is a link from Eckler's as an example:
You could also give Gene @ Fred Beans or Bob @ Fichtner a call from the Parts section of the supporting Ads to the left of the screen. They do appear on Ebay from time to time but that is of course buyer beware.

tried to resync/ reprogram and nothing happens. Looked @ the electronics and can't see anything but I didn't use a magnifying glass.
I'll mess w/ it again tonight but I think they are toast.
When you re assembled it, did you get it back together in the correct orientation?
Use the other one as a template to determine if anything internal is missing and if the orientation is correct.
They are quite robust and usually can hadled being slammed to the ground ( they will pop open on contact and the guts will fly out)...
Don't ask... i know....
Just make sure the parts are all there and it is reassembled correctly
