Default keyfob reprogram

What do you all mean by "reprogramming" a keyfob? Is this when you push the lock and unlock buttons for 7 seconds and wait for the chirp? I replaced the battery which was dead, pushed the two buttons for 7 seconds and no chirpy, no workee. Does the ignition need to be on when doing this? There are no bad solder joints but there is a component near the main chip that is rattling. Not sure what that is or whether it's supposed to rattle when shaken?

What you have done is "re-sync" the key fob. To reprogram or retrain the fob you need to enter the retraining mode on the DIC. Follow these instructions (also found in your owners manual if you have one.)

The manual for my 97 says

"Try to resynchronize the transmitter by pressing and holding the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons for seven seconds when standing next to the vehicle." This will attempt to resynchronize the security code in your RFA key fob transmitter.

When resynchronization is achieved the horn will chirp. If attempts to resynchronize your transmitter to the vehicle are not successful, you man need to match the transmitter to the vehicle.

To match the transmitter to your vehicle:

1. Turn the ingnition key to the ON position
2. Clear any warning messages on the Driver Information Center (DIC) by pressing the RESET button.
3. Press the OPTIONS button on the DIC several times until the blank page is displayed, then press and hold the RESET button for two seconds.
4. When the message FOB TRAINING is displayed, push the RESET button once. The message HOLD LK+UNLK 1ST FOB will be displayed.

5. Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter simultaneously for 15 seconds.

6. When a transmitter is learned, the DIC will display FOB LEARNED and then prompt you to learn the next transmitter.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each additional transmitter.

8. Remove the key from the ignition.

The programmer mode will shut off if:

You don't program any transmitters for two minutes.
You take the key out of the ignition.
You have programmed three transmitters.

Hope this helps.

Paul

talon you beat me to it.
all I can add is make a copy of the instructions and keep handy in the glove box because the next time you need it you will forget how to do it. (trust me on that)

It now works.

I will now visualize reading my owners manual so I can learn more of the DIC functions.

Would you believe the Stealership said I would need to pay an extra 40 dollars to have the fob programmed? This was like a month or so ago and I knew I had seen this topic here before so I came here and used the search function, I printed out the instructions but most likely I will lose the printout and end up coming back here and searching for it again the next time I need it.
