DES MOINES, Iowa -- Three people were killed in a collision between a semi and a Corvette on Interstate 80 in Jasper County Saturday night.
The Interstate highway was closed in both directions from 7:30 p.m. on and was expected to be re-opened around midnight.
The Iowa State Patrol says witnesses saw the semi driving eastbound at a high rate of speed when it collided with a Corvette in the adjoining lane.
Both vehicles went into the center median and fell off a bridge, crashing to a roadway below that was under construction. The truck and passenger car burst into flames.
Two people in the Corvette were killed, as was the semi driver.
Authorities were searching the truck but did not believe anyone else was injured or killed.
Traffic was shut down between mile markers 164 and 173 in both directions. Troopers were routing traffic through Newton.
Troopers said witnesses told them the semi was speeding at 80 or 90 miles per hour when it collided with the Corvette.
"They both entered the center media, busting through the guard rail and vaulting onto the road that's under construction down below," said Trooper Marc Griggs. "Once they hit the east side of that road, both vehicles burst into flames."

I-80 near 168 interchange was closed in both directions.

Authorities said that both vehicles went into the center median and fell off a bridge, crashing to a roadway below that was under construction. The truck and passenger car burst into flames.
Officials said the Corvette spun in front of the semi, which pushed the car through the guardrail and off the overpass onto the embankment below. The tractor-trailer driver and two people in the Corvette were killed.
I-80 was closed for nine miles between mile markers 164 and 173 in both directions as crews tried to put out the fire and figure out what went wrong. Troopers routed traffic through Newton.
"Looks like the semi was changing lanes, came into contact with a car that was in the opposite lane that it wanted to go into. When the semi entered the lane that the car was in, it clipped the car to the point where the car came in front of the semi and eventually got pushed down the highway," said Kirk Lundgren of the Iowa State Patrol.
Authorities searched the truck, but they did not believe anyone else was injured or killed.
of all the things i see in our corvette, the thing that scares me most is the 18 wheeler for several reasons. i'm not convinced they can see a corvette anywhere around them---the kiss of death is to be beside an 18 wheeler when they start changing lanes or wandering on the roadway because the driver is tired, high, or whatever. reason #2 that the big rigs scare the living **** out of me is that they plainly DRIVE TOO FAST! on rt 581 here in south central pa 2 days ago, a big rig driver came up on stopped traffic WAY TOO FAST & was not paying attention. end result is rig ran over 8 cars; 1 dead many injured & maimed forever because some inattentive lowlife (who of course was not injured) driving the big rig didn't give a ripping **** about anything. i am a staunch advocate of driving the speed limit but i'll use all 345 horses in my c5 to get away from the sides of an 18 wheeler. bub
