Chirped the first three gears easily and they were firmly planted in their seats, which they loved with the red/black accents. One of them was SO impressed with just the handling of the Z and how it corned like a railcar from the movie TRON. :chevy :yesnod: :eek:
I'm almost through break-in also, I won't really play until I reach 750. I just want to be sure ya know The suspension, traction, ETC. are really tight ,steering as well and IT FEELS GOOD !!! I LOVE MY Z06 :D Today is a Zaino day. WAVING :seeya
As a coupe owner whose wife got a Z06 last month, I can speak to the differences, since I'm in and out of both cars pretty frequently: the Z just feels much more buttoned down on road trips. Even though road noise can be a little louder than the coupe, I find it to be way superior on the highway. Ride is not harsh on most surfaces (I have Z51 in the coupe). The steering feels different as well - seems more precise, and it's "weighted" differently.
And then, of course, there's the Z06 power and the six-speed - you get through 1st so quick it's almost not useable. My coupe has light mods and dynos ~310 at the wheels, so it's what? 375 or so? The Z has way more ba!!s - way more.
Ahh, but I love the coupe - gotta have one car we can pop the top on, living out here! But I feel real fortunate that I don't have to choose just one!

I don't mean to be disrespectfull, but didn't they already put the whoop on your
motor at the factory? A guy at work was at the factory last month and said he
was amazed to watch the new cars running on the dyno at full throttle, squirreling
around, etc. I think he said that each car had an 8 minute work out on the dyno.
Wouldn't the damage already be done if there was going to be any? I had the
impression that the reason for doing the dyno work at the factory was to make
sure the engine/drive train was all up to snuff and the car was ready to go.
Yes, you're correct. I had the Navy Blue A4 Coupe with the 2400 Stall TC, Longtube Headers, and Mongoose 400 Package. When I originally test drove the 01' Z06, I had noticed a night n' day difference in handling and performance. Namely, I felt more planted in my seat with the Z06 even on WOT take-offs in the A4. The throttle response in the Z felt more deliberate as to where the A4's was very loose probably because of the TC. Also, at 75 mph on the expressway, I can drop it down a couple gears and the car still pulls extremely hard, where as, in the Coupe at 80 mph, I didn't get as much pull from that speed. There probably are a few contributing factors on this one, the different cam, higher compression ratio, and better overall breathing system. One thing that I am absolutely amazed at, is that at 80 MPH in th Z06, the car is LOAFING at 1700 RPM in 6th gear!
The suspension on the Z06 is very tight and I have noticed that on corners, the car just pushes you through the turn; coming out of it alot quicker. The Z51 suspension was very good, but not as good as the FE4 IMHO.
As for the Coupe, I traded it into the Dealer for the new car. I was able to save big money in sales tax this way. So I was happy with the outcome on that. Only lost a little bit of money, as opposed to selling it outright.

Your friend is flat wrong. New Corvettes are not put on a dyno, it's nothing but a treadmill device to provide resistance for the motor for the emissions test - it does not measure HP or TQ. The car never goes over 70 MPH.
I'll use the edit opportunity to tell Jerry that he's wrong - been there and watched the factory dyno test - saw an NBM coupe redlined thru four gears, dancing on the drums while hooked up to the computer. That is not an emissions test! The 500-mile break-in advice is BoguS, imho

After the NCM delivery on my 2000 coupe I waited until I hit the exit 28 on ramp before going over 100 MPH.
Guess what I'm going to do next friday at 12 noon?
Just returned from Carlisle...Spoke with GM Engineering with Corvette.....asked about the breaking in of the new Z06.....stated to me...NO PROBLEM going over the '55'mph limit for the first 500 miles. The MOST important thing to remember is...while going up to 80 mph...just do it gradual! He emphasized very clear to me...THIS was important. Otherwise,one WILL have a whine emitting from their rear-end...4-ever!!!! Must take it gingerly for the first 500 miles,getting to high speeds......If this is followed ,it will allow for the meshing of the gears to wear in correctly and "quietly"!!
Zeeman -- good info on the break-in advice from Corvette engineering. It's rare that people can get that kind of 'insider' information. Got any other insider engineering tidbits? :D

I'm not wrong, I had the private tour of the plant on Tuesday as part of my museum delivery. Jim Hall, Adam Boca & I watched a car on the treadmill and I specifically asked about the process. It is not a dyno, it is used for emissions certification only. They do not redline the car, the acceleration is gradual - the test we watched was a 6 speed and they topped out at 70 MPH in 4th gear. The car does move around some on the rollers but it is not a violent type of test like a max effort on a chassis dyno.

Thanks Phil...what did you do with all the mods on the 2000? Did you take them off or just leave them on? Was the dealer ok with it if you just left them on?
That said Jerry, I too have been to the factory and watched the "tech" driving the car grin at all of us watching and give it a little more than normal. Needless to say, he went more than 70 - as seen on the tv screen readout that was in front of the car that we could all see - and definitely took it pretty near the red line - again, could see it all on the screen.
I think you are correct in what this is designed to do, but many of the cars get driven on it different than others.

My main point is that there is no dyno in the Corvette plant. The machine does not measure HP or TQ, it's strictly for emissions validation. It's likely that some of the "drivers" go overboard on occassion but redlining the car in any gear is not part of the program and would quite possibly screw up the test results. The test program calls for a maximum of 70 MPH. All the cars go out on a short test track after passing the emissions test - that's why brand new cars have 3 or 4 miles on the clock. Again, there are opportunities for abuse but I think that's rare.
