So heres something I cant stand, these GD gravel/earth/garbage, WTF, they are trucks on the road.
These things just SPEW crap out of and over the top. And you cant avoid it, absent pulling over and letting the frigging thing get miles ahead of you, which isnt always possible or convienant. You can run into a "jetstream" of random crap from a truck thats a mile or more in front of you.
Maybe the average person doesnt give a rats, but for the person that gives a flying one about their car this kind of thing is just annoying and frustrating as hell. If this was some little kid peppering cars with a slingshot as they drove by, you'd call the cops. Some dink leaves a trail of flying debris for miles and its, "thems the breaks".
I feel the same as you, but what really pizzes me off are the people who throw lite cigarette butts out of their windows. This is not good when the top is off. Hey butthead my vette isn't your damn ashtray. Oh crap, now you got me started.
Everyone of us have been in your shoes I just moved from N VA and the cops there have special teams just for truck enforcement because it is such a big problem. Unfortunately, there are too many trucks. If it isn't the load flying out, it's flying rocks from tires. I had 5 windshields in 3 years driving I-66 there, not to mention the paint chips. I am so glad I don't have to do that anymore. I wish you the best
Quite a few years back, a rock or boulder was stuck between the duals on the trailer. It let go at highway speeds and went through a windshield killing the woman passenger.
Don't get me started on the idiots who throw cig. butts out the window. Like there is nothing out there in the environment that burns. Inconsiderate @#$%%^^&!!!!!!!
Oh yes, cigarette butts, I got one of those as a present one day. Shot in thru the open roof, burned a hole in the cargo cover. Yay for random azzhats.
Yeah, I hate them too. When I lived in AZ, I got behind a gravel truck and sure enough, my windshield broke (it wasn't in the Corvette, I didn't have one then, it was a firebird). Now, I hate getting behind them.
Now, on my way to work, I drive by a gravel pit and there are trucks going in and out all the time. I guess I just have to be careful.
Let's not forget the asshats that dump the remainder of their morning coffee/soda/tea into the street. After the person in front of me runs over it, it is now on my paint. Thanx douche.
If your car does get damaged by any material falling out of a hauling truck, they are responsible for the damage. Just make sure you get the name of the truck company. There is a law here which is refered to as "escaping debris". A lot of companies will put stickers on the rear of dump trucks telling motorist to stay at least 100 feet back-not responsible for falling debris. They are 100% wrong and it's a smoke screen. They are responsible.
But try and avoid the headache completely, if you're in back of a dump truck turn your vette the other direction.
In the past 6 months, I have put 2 windshields in my truck and the wife 1 in her car because of freaking dump trucks. They should be made to put cages around the damn things.

In Washington state, a woman was severly injured a while back by some junk that flew off of a truck and crashed through her windshield. She was a beautiful woman before the accident and now has been permanently disfigured. More recently a man just avoided being killed by a chunk of metal that bounced off another truck and shattered his windshield.
As a result, our legislature passed new laws increasing the penalty for those who travel with loose loads. Unfortunately, they often are not caught and even if they are, the damage has been done.
As far as possible, I will not drive behind any vehicle that's carrying a load in the back. If I have to, I'll slow way down, get over, or do anything to avoid being in that position. It's a shame that some irresponsible drivers don't ensure that their loads are safe and will stay in place.
Ohio's just as bad. Sucks for me right now I live by 2 asphalt companies. Another thing they do that annoys me is drip tar so bad that we have mounds of it at every stoplight. Big 3-4" humps of it all over the road everywhere.
I try to keep my car off the highways because of it. Rocks thrown at 35-45 don't travel nearly as far.
Which is why I always think its funny but when someone brags about their car having "all highway miles." I think to myself.... ok, so your saying its beat? The windshield is totally sandblasted? Your suspension is trashed from hitting speedbump sized frost heaves at 65mph all day?
Being from AZ I can feel your pain. The whole state is a giant sand blaster that destroys windshields and paint. Because of the housing boom here, there are construction vehicles everywhere and it seems that all of them have crap flying out of them. My windshield is covered with giant dings from rocks and debris. Amazing I have no cracks. My windshield deductible is the same as my collsion deductible, $500, so I am not in a big hurry to replace my windshield, just so it can be destroyed again.

You may want to see about lowering glass coverage. Having it at $500 is not practical. I have yet to buy a windshield for my vette, but for my camaro, my deductable was $250, and the windshield cost $230 installed. I doubt a vette windshield is much more than $500. But I could be wrong.
