Default New Z06 - Clunking

New to this forum and just purchased a MY 03 Z06 with 3900 miles (will post pics soon). I have been experiencing some strange clunking/rattling sound when I go over bumps (seems to come from under the passenger area) and was wondering if anyone has any remedies. In addition, when I brake, I hear a seperate clunking sound. Looking for any advice you guys can give me. Unfortunately the car is out of warranty.

BTW, is it me or does everyone else's brakes squeek?

Thanks in advance.

Brake squeak at 10 mph or less is normal. Clunking sound is not. No way to solve without more info.

Do you have anything behind the pass seat? Is it all the way back and touching the rear of the car? Mine does it is my window shade is tight behind the pass seat. Hope this helps.

Rattle is definately coming from under the car. It is a lot more noticeable with the windows down.

I"m running Hotchkis bars and I get an occasional clunk or rattle. Perhaps the previous owner installed them. Just a thought. Good luck.

I have been hunting for a clunk in my 03 Z for several years now. Mine occurs on sharp bumps and seems to come from behind me like it is in the left rear suspension (shock absorber bushing ???). I have checked the rear suspension everytime I prep the car for the track and cannot find anything that would make the noise. While it was under warranty I had the dealer check it out also but they couldn't find anything either.

just got back from the dealer and he said that the noise was due to a slide on the rear calipers being "ground" down. Does this make any sense? Thanks for your responses so far guys.

Up top you said the car has 3900 miles. When he said "ground down" did he mean from usage or someone actually ground it down? Seems unlikely that anything on the brakes, even the pads, could be ground down that fast unless someone was beating the heck out of the car.

IMHO, the clunk from under the car is probably the exhaust, an exhaust bracket or one of the shields under there. Either take it to a local shop that will put it up on a lift for you, or jack it up yourself if you know how (remember safety first), and push and pull the exhaust and see if it's loose anywhere. Look for a broken bracket or anything else that could be banging. Did the dealer repair the caliper/bracket/slide? If not, they are easy and cheap enough to remove and replace. Do that and see if that solves the problem.

It doesn't make sense to me:
* caliper
* caliper brackets (the slide??)
* pistons inside the caliper
* brake pads against the pistons...
..and the caliper is being ground down?? On a car with 3900 miles??

The dealer repaired the bracket/caliper/slide on both the rear wheels. Problem solved. No more clunking. I was shocked as well to hear what he thought was the root cause of the noise and it is concerning that the car has only 3900 miles. I'll definately be purchasing an extended warranty.

My 04 has been making a clunking sound. It really sounds like an exhaust clunk. Happens on rough roads. I'm trying to understand if yours was a clunk like that of an exhaust component being loose or more of a lighter sounding click/clank( I know this is a weird road to go down, but mine is driving me nuts)

I've had the dealer look at it twice, they hear it, but cannot figure it out.

Does the ZO6 have baffels in the mufflers that can break loose? All my exhaust components are tight. I just can't imagine something to do with the calipers making this deep sounding clunk

Did they show you what had happened?
