I use clear contact paper avaliable at Lowes/Home Depot etc. it sticks on well and is barely noticeable. Best thing is that it is cheap and can be pulled off at the end of the day and trashed. I have used this at the drag strip and for HPDE days.
You'll may laugh, but try Pam non stick for cooking. I use to use that on my SVO at the track. Spray on the Pam and when your done, spray & wipe it off w/ a hose. Worked pretty well particularly on the lower rear quarter & bumper.
Thanks For The Help
Just Wondering If The Contact Paper Would Leave Any Adhesive Residue On The Bumper
I have used it on headlite covers and the mirrors for an 8 hr drive in the summer time. It peels right off and sometimes leaves a little residue but the residue is not hard to remove. I think I used bug & tar remover when I found a little residue a few weeks later that I had not initially seen. If used in cooler weather or for only a few hours it might not leave any residue. The little bit residue was much easier to remove than if I had had to remove the bugs.
It comes in a 18" wide roll and is cheap. If putting it on a curved surface where it won't lay flat just slit it with a knife or scissors and let it overlap. It is not noticable from a distance. I think it would work well to keep the rubber off the car.
I have never noticed any residue with the contact paper. I usually peel it off, then go over thte paint with some detail spray. Much easier than scraping melted rubber off the paint.
That's why I like the ugly tape, it doesn't remove the wax like bug/tar remover or Spam.
Robert
But unless you have a baby blue car it is so ugly!!
I can't be for sure because have not tried it but I think if the car is waxed and if it is not left on for hours in the hot sun there might not be any residue with the contact paper.
And the best part is instead of clear you could get a nice pattern or floral design etc. to decorate your car.
Bought Some Of The Contact Paper At Home Depot, Unfortunately I Have Not Been Able To Test It At The Track Due To This Rain That Keeps Preventing Me From Going. I Cant Catch A Break With It Everyday I Set Up To Go It Rains. Anyway The Paper Looks Like It Will Work Well Thanks For All The Help.
Had tons of cars and am a detail freak, this is what I do!!!
For Autocrossing/Road Racing Use Duct Tape or Painters tape to Stop the Rubber From Sticking and Road Chips, themn just take some Goo-Gone or Prepsolve to take the residue off, usually gotta rewax the spots were tape was, but better that than rockchips/rubber everywhere!!
For Drag Racing and Long Trip with Lots of Bugs use Silicone Sprayor Spam, then just wash of with Soap and Water Afterwards, Dont take the wax off and is easy to do!!!
I was just out at Pocono yesterday running on the track. Several of the Vette guys had a clear plastic on their cars. I asked what it was and one guy said clear shelf liner. Not contact paper, which has a very heavy glue, but shelf liner. The sticky backer is enough to hold it on even at high speed, but it comes off easier than contact paper and leaves little or no residue. I'm going to get me some and give it a try. The trick, apparently, is to run it in the direction of air flow, to minimize the wind getting under it and lifting it.
SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD IDEA, WHERE WOULD YOU BUY SOMETHING LIKE THAT. THE ONLY THING I SAW AT H/D WAS THE CONTACT PAPER THAT IS SUPPOSE TO BE USED AS A SHELF LINER.
I have never looked at Home Depot etc. for it. I have always picked it up at K-Mart, WalMart etc. You want clear shelf liner. Of course it comes in colors and patterns if that is your thing.
i use wide strips of blue painters tape. easy on and off sometimes i dont use it depending on track prep(track not prepped nothing will stick) usually a good coat of wax keeps everything off.
At Lowes it is back around the kitchen cabinet stuff. I had to ask the first time. Shelf liner is the stuff you want. I actually thought shelf liner and contact paper were the same thing.
Kmart or Walmart. About $7 a roll of shelf liner. The shelf liner is repositionable so it tends not to stick so hard like contact paper.
For HPDE use. Take some quick detail wax and put it werever you plan to put the shelf liner. Then put on shelf liner. Worst places are the lower area from front to rear. Just use the whole width of the sheet and tuck it under the body a bit. Put 2 strips on your hood as it tends to get tattered also. Including headlights. Rear quarter behind the wheels also. Then use blue painters tape inside the wheel well edge. I also use mirror bras and nose bra because that takes a thrashing.
Only time I see residue is where there are air bubbles. So if you want to be **** about it get the air bubbles out. I put it on Friday before I leave for the track and take it off when I get home Sunday night. That way it also helps on the highway when I go to a track 5-6 hours away.
The residue comes off easy with soap and water and a quick detail wax spray. If you go to the track it will get dirty, that is a given.
Also consider carpet liner. Wider roll and more length. It's thinner than shelf liner but good enough for dirt and rubber. That you can find at HD or Lowes.
