There's a new place in town in the same building as the 15 minute oil change place. It's a tint and deli place where you get a free sammich and soda while you wait for your car.
He quoted me $120 for both side windows and the back in my FRC, 5/20%. I'm going in Thursday at noon, wish me luck because I know it sounds too good to be true.
I'll post pics when I get it done.
I asked him about that and he seemed pretty confident he could do it. He's going to sand the dots.
This guy just seemed to have a confident air about himself and his work, that's why I decided to go with him. I'll let you all know if I was right.
I know the concept sounds kinda mickey mouse but it actually looked like a pretty professional setup. Deli out front, tint garage out back, office in the middle. It's actually two seperate business with some kind of deal between the two.
A tinter who knows their trade can tint over the dot without sanding or painting.
I agree. I've done a lot of research into how different tint companies deal with the matrix dots on the rear window. I've spoken to at least 25 different tint companies. Some say that they sand the dots, but they admit there's a good chance of scratching the glass. Some said that they use steel wool to rough up the dot surface, but they also admit to the possibility scratching the glass. Some paint the over the dots, but they admit that the paint will eventually flake and peel over time. Some said that they put a piece of black plastic vinyl over the dots, but they admit that they vinyl will fade after time. Some said that they use a razor blade and sheer off the dots from the glass. Also a chance of scratching the glass with this method. Several of the companies said that they use a spray-on adhesive to glue the tint to the dots. To me this seemed like the most effective and safest method to use. I went with the spray glue method and no problems so far.
Got my windows tinted and had a roast beef and swiss sammich while I waited. It took him longer than he thought, he'd never done an FRC but it didnt show. He did a very nice job and the car looks awesome!
I had tinkered with doing it myself but after watching him I'm glad I didnt. He used all kinds of little tricks you'd only know if you did it for a living. I woulda just stuck it on with a squeegee!
The side windows are 20% and the back window is 5% and it looks badass! It makes the front window look way darker too which is what I hoped.
Final price for a tint and a sammich? $115.00!!!!
Of course when I told him I was going to post it here on the Corvette forum he told me the next one he did he would charge more money. So the price for a tint and a sammich is now $150.
If anyone wants to drive to Zephyrhills, just NE of Tampa for a tint and a sammich, PM me and I'll hook you up with his number.
Pics will be forthcoming.
