I have a 2002 Coupe with 30K miles. It's in outstanding condition, inside and out. Bought it at 18K miles nearly two years ago. The paint or coating on the stock mufflers is flaking off. Looks like it's aluminized or stainless underneath. Any ideas for a DIY fix at home (no lift available) to paint or coat them so they look original (black) again?
I painted the mufflers of a '96 LT4 using paint made for barbeque grills. I bought a quart can at Home Depot. I used scotch brite pads and alcohol to clean them and then painted. Worked very well. I plan on doing my '02 vert.

I did the same.
I brushed on some high temp flat black BBQ paint. Works fine.
I used "rub n buff" I got it from a arts and craft store like Hobby Lobby. I put it on a year or so ago and it is still there. Never burnt off. You can see it on my pipes. Hope this helps.

Exactly what I did, only I used exhaust paint (flat black), wire brush, and alcohol. This is what the TSB calls for.
Check the 2001 Corvette TSB listing from Chevrolet. They issued one while I had my 2001 Coupe covering the flaking paint on the mufflers. Had it fixed under warranty. The TSB was very specific as to a strip, and repaint process along with a specific paint recommendation. It worked for 2+ years with no additional flaking till I sold the car. It's worth the effort to fix it one time correctly.
Thanks! This was just the kind of advice I was looking for.
Get some sand paper clean it up and get high temp spray paint and tape off the parts you don't want to paint. That will give you that factory look. I would never brush paint them
The stock exhaust system should be stainless...i would use the grill high temp paint and repaint them. For my stainless corsas, i used POR 15 manifold gray and painted them for a factory look, of course the tips are bright chrome
