Whining...under acceleration...hmmm...it's prolly coming from the guy that's fading in your rear-view mirror...
I have the exact same noise w/ my 03 30k miles and the dealer said typical noise coming from the transmission. It annoys the crap out of me. If you think it is loud now I would not recomend a shifter, 10x as loud. I wondered about changing the fluid, I am going to give it a try. I argued with my dealer three times about the noise and they say alot of them have....BS?
I've noticed a whining sound under acceleration too and tracked it down to my wife.It sounded like, slooooow down, sloooow down. As long as I drive like my grandmother it goes away.

Do you have an open element air cleaner or cold air intake? I tracked down a lot of the whining sounds from my K&N filter. The noise just seemed to be louder after this install. My fluids were all fresh. No tranny or rear problems for what it's worth.
I agree that you should try changing the transmission fluid. I'd change the differential fluid as well. For the tranny, use a high quality ATF like the new Mobil 1, Royal Purple or Red Line. For the diff, I personally use Red Line 75W90. It's a synthetic hypoid gear oil with limited slip modifiers already included, so you don't add any of the GM stuff. Some folks swear by Royal Purple severe pressure gear oil, but I've always used Red Line. Just a personal preference. Both jobs are simple DIY jobs, if you know how to jack up the rear of the car and put it on jack stands (safety first. remember to chock the front wheels).
I get a whistling/sucking noise from my vortex intake... most any intake will produce more noise.
The drive-line can and will make some whining or whiring noise, some is normal. Does your car have an aftermarket shifter? They will amplify the noises and transmit more into the cabin.
Have you considered the alternator? Mine (02Z)whines a bit and the sound comes from under the drivers door, especially if there is a curb on the right side of the road. Sound reflection is sometimes wierd.
