I have noticed occasional squeeks coming from the engine bay, especially when it is really hot outside. Today it is only 70 outside and there are no squeeks coming from under the hood. Would this maybe be a need for a new belt? Or could it be something else? Would it be a good idea to get a new belt anyway, just in case?
Don't want to spend any money I don't need to, but would rather be safe than sorry.
could be the tensioner going bad or worse yet in my case the bushing between the bottom pulley and the balancer was seperating......lemme see if I can find that thread....
yeah I thought it was my idler pulley although it was fairly new after the SC install but the squeek was intermittent and I could trace it...some days it didnt squeek at all then one day I noticed the belt was shredding
Thanks for the info. The belt has not squeeked for the past three days or more and when I took it in, I told the techs that fact. They told me to wait for the squeeks to start again and then to just bring it in so they could hear it. Hope I don't have any problems jump up and bite me in the @ss because of this holding off.
Will take a good look in the engine bay and see if I can find any evidence of what you all were talking about. Thanks again.

Well, I checked out the engine bay and could see no clue to a bad bushing, nor could I see any rust. But then again, I'm not a mechanic and really don't know what and where to look. Belt seems fine; no frays. As for the tensioners, how can you tell? Is there anything I can do as for lubricating, or whatever, to eliminate any other possible causes?

No lubricants. Get them on your belts and you may have even more problems. Best to do as your tech recommended and wait until the squeaks start again and you can determine where they're coming from. Then, you will know what needs to be fixed.
OK, thanks.
As a side, I found an independant shop that has a couple of technicians that are experienced/trained on corvettes. In fact, when I stopped in to check the place out, they had two C3s sitting there being worked on. After talking to them, they seemed very competent and friendly. Have a good feeling about this place, hope it works out.
Back in the 60's and 70's we used to call small block Chevys "Mouse Motors" as opposed to the "Rat" motor big block, maybe there was something to that.

My family, when I was growing up in those times, was always buying MOPAR. So I can't recall anything like that. If that was indeed the case about Chevy engines, what was the likely cause for the squeeks?
