Came out to the garage this morning and have a spot under the back diff. I was looking threw the forum and see this is a common problem, wasn't able to really get a involved answer in what it will take to fix and the corret way to fix. Any insite will be greatly apprecaited. The car is a 01 Triple black 6-speed convert...My baby...
very common problem. not really an "easy" fix though. lot of work. the whole rear suspension will have to be dropped.
the diff. is going to have to come off. i suppose you could probably changes the seals with it in the car, but it would be MUCH easier having the diff. out to work on.
Here's hoping you have an extended warranty. Mine started leaking at about 6,000 miles. Took about 3 trips to the dealer to finally get all seals replaced correctly. No problems now.
the leak! My '04 is at dealer tonignt to get the 3rd try a fix. I am at 35200 millles so looking for extended coverage. Jump in to let me know what I should do to make sure I am covered.....
Good luck with your fix, my last fix included a new cover plate and seals. Make sure they check axle vent is not blocked.
My '00 Coupe was in the shop twice. First trip, they replaced the output seal. Had to drop the diff/trans/shaft down. A month later, the input seal began leaking. The transmission shop, owned by a local club supporter, repaired it and I've had no leaks since. (knock on wood/fiberglass)
I unfortunately just noticed this in my new (to me) 2001 this weekend. The entire driver's side cover is caked in oil/dirt. It only leaves a quarter size stain each time and sometimes doesn't drip at all. Everything around that side is clean so I'm hoping its only the seal on the cover. I checked the fluid level and it's right up to the fill hole. My plan is to keep an eye on it, check the fluid every weekend or so and hope I can delay the fix until the spring.

When you say "drivers side cover" where would I look exactly? More info would be great...Thanks in advance
Click this link and put in the part number, most of the time it's the left side or driver side that leaks, you should replace both gaskets with the new ones above.

Not a bad job.. You do not have to drop the differentail to do the job. Just remove the drive shaft and your there.

You will need to get the seal replaced where the half shaft enters the differential. Mine has had this problem 3 times (thankfully all fixed under warranty). Looks like they finally got it fixed the last time.
I had one of my seals leaking, I had them all replaced, had the seal between the tranny and the diff swapped and I was charged $650 for it all. I had this done in January and I have driven the car hard it it is still clean as a whistle.
I recommend just finding a decent shop that does work on VETTEs and pay to have it done.
