Hi,
Hope you guys don't slam me, but constructive comments are appreciated! Took my newly purchased 99 FRC with 55,000 miles to the Jiffy lube since I was stressed for time and it was overdue. Got the full synthetic Quaker state oil change in 5-30. Anyway, during conversation, I asked about changing out the Manaual trans fluid and a Diff. service. I noticed on the computer that the Diff. service said that the Gm additive needed to be installed along with the fluids. I asked about it and they said they had the additive in another brand. Not to be silly, but should I even consider getting either service done at Jiffy or should it go to the dealer or another full service repair shop? What are the service intervals on both trans and rear end? Thanks for the advice!
Gary
I run Royal Purple in my car and the Differential oil has the additive already. In fact I have the purple stuff in my entire car and really like it and my trans shifts eaiser and the diff is quieter than before, as far as the engine goes I have a FI setup so I do not get my oil dirty enough to know if the purple stuff is better than the others, but I am happy with it
Honestly, I would not allow JIFFY LUBE to do anything to my car anymore. I watched a clip about the a few JIFFY LUBEs in California ripping folks off. Not to say that does not happen everywhere, but I just feel more comfortable having someone that has experience and training to work on my car.
Please don't think I am bashing JIFFY LUBE, I am just expressing my personal opnion on what I think. If I am in a crunch, I will take the filter and oil to a JIFFY LUBE and have them do that.
GM does not make the posi additive... someone makes it for them... so you will be fine with another manufacturers additive.
I trust you checked that the QS synthetic met GM4718M
Most people here use either Mobil 1 or Amsoil or Royal Purple or Redline products throughout their Vette.
There is no need to go to the stealership. Go to whomever your trust , that will use lubricants that meet the recommended specs.
Would still like some more comments, but thanks to all that took the time! I watched the guys at the Jiffy closely, but I know how we all feel about our vettes, even the daily drivers like mine!
thanks,
Gary
Where can I find that spec GM4718m mentioned? I used to use Mobil 1 in my Trans am, but did not know all synthetics did not make the grade or meet specs. Guess I need educating!
thanks
Gary
I'd be very concerned if QS meets GM specs. As stated above most use Mobil1, Amsoil, or Redline products. I personally used Amsoil in my tranny and rear differential. I also use Mobil1 for the engine oil. However, I might make the change to Amsoil for the engine as well.
I'll NEVER take my car to Jiffy Lube again. Years ago I took my vert there with the proper Mobil1 oil and filter just to have them change it for me as I was pressed for time that day. The kid changing the fluid used no protection on the fender and scratched it up with his big "redneck" belt buckle. After the steam stopped coming out of my ears I vowed to never allow anyone to work on my car again if at all possible.

I've used Jiffy Lube to change the oil and diff and tranny fluids in my cars. I always take the Service Manual with me since it gives all the correct oil change procedures, and has the correct torque settings for the filler bolts that need to be tightened. The Jiffy Lube I use provides Mobil 1 oil if its asked for. Before you go order the Posi Friction Modifier ($5 to $10) at your dealer's parts counter and when it comes in take it with you to the Jiffy Lube. If you make nice with the employees at Jiffy Lube and talk about your car and their cars you probably will get excellent service and they will look forward to you coming back. Biggest problem I've had with them is the drool that gets all over the car when they are lusting over it.

Gary,
Went to Quaker States website and verified that their 5w30 synthetic does meet GM Standard 4718M for you.
You can see how that oil stacks up to most other oils on the market in this AMSOIL commissioned motor oil test: Comparative Motor Oil Test
FYI, the tranny takes a fluid meeting GM Dexron III standards, which is an ATF. The diff spec is a synthetic 75w90 with friction modifier. Be careful though as many synthetic 75w90s such as Redline or AMSOIL come with the friction modifier pre-mixed in so adding additional friction modifier to the diff is not normally needed.
I either do the work myself or take it to the stealership. I avoid Jiffy Lube and similiar types of service places. Sure, I may spend more money but have more peace of mind.
Thanks to all! Thanks Subdriver for all the oil info! Guess I should go back to the Mobil 1 or Amsoil. Where do I buy Amsoil?
thanks,
Gary
