I'm preparing to get new set of GY GSD3 tires installed on my 2000 coupe. I recently purchased the car used and was reading through the owner's manual for a description of the "wheel nut key". The manual was not clear to me about this. I have non original thin spoke chrome wheels on the car and haven't checked whether these is a wheel nut lkey in one of my rear storage compartments.
Could someone explain what the key is? Does every wheel nut require the key for removal? I'm going to check to see if the key is in the car since I don't want any surprises whenever I have the tires changed. I assume that the original wheel nuts are on the car.
Each wheel should have one special lug nut that requires a matching lug nut key. It has a special pattern on the outside of the lug nut that prevents a regular lug nut wrench from fitting and to prevent theft. There is a small slot between the left and middle compartments in the rear where that is kept. If yours is not there your will probably have to order one from a Stealership, but I would check around with other C5 owner in your area first. They just might have one that fits your pattern.
Btw, I also have the GS D3s and really am pleased.
Good luck!
you mean "wheel LOCK key"....it's a special lugnut key that one lugnut per wheel fits(forgive my yoda-ness). If you take your plastic caps off one each wheel, one lugnut should look different, it a special lugnut used to help prevent wheel theft(it doesnt). In the rear middle compartment on the left side is a place for the key. If it's not there and you bought the vette used it could be in the other side compartments, the glove box, the center console or in bumf**k New York. It is about 2 1/2 " long hollow in the middle with a 19mm(or 3/4" standard) hex on the bottom to put a socket over it and blackish color- If you can't find it, you can remove your locknuts with a (I believe) 18 mm socket and hammer it on(careful not to damage the square female section where the ratchet goes in) , and use an impact gun or a long handle ratchet to remove them, then tap the locknuts out with a punch and hammer, and buy 4 regular GM lugnuts, good luck!
