Default Time to upgrade?

Ok went back to the stealership today and they have racked up a price of 15,000 to fix tranny and rearend.. just in parts... And they have not got an answer on the warranty company (extended aftermarked warranty) to see what they will cover. So now i am thinking of taking my car home on a flat bed with the tranny already out and do it in my garage for ALOT less. But i dont think i would like togo stock so should i look into a built rear with 4.10's or 3.90's? I am upgrading to a ls7 clutch ls2 flywheel anything else i should do since the tranny will be out? this is all if warranty will not cover anything. 15,000 just in parts

If the warranty is not gonna pay... you can do a whole lot of things for $15,000.

IF they're talking $15K then you probably can do it yourself for less than $5K.....

I lost the automatic transmission in my 2000 last fall. I had some one find a tranny that had been in a car that had caught fire. The fire was conatianed to the front of the car. Since I am mechanically challenged, I had Joey install it for me. I took him the car on a roll back the Friday after Thanksgiving, around 2:00. He had the other tranny in by noon on Satruday. I think the used tranny was around $2,100 and he always gives me a break on labor. The entier process was less than $3,000. When he pulled the transmission pan, you could have filled a shot glas with the metal chunks!!!! BIG chunks! So he flushed it out twice with tranny fluid, then used a third batch to keep in it. So all in all, it was a good deal for me. If you are so inclined, look for a tranny out of a wrecked one like I have.

I had the dealer replace the tranny in my 97 A4 for about $3K and it was brand new. I'd find another dealer.

I live on a island.. and its 40% markup from the mainland so that sucks. Well i will have todo everything out of my garage then and find a used tranny i can pick up somewhere.

That cost is insane, I converted my A4 to a MN6 with labor all new parts for under 6K. How could parts alone cost that much, you are being ripped off.

A built to the moon hardened A4 is roughly $2,000. Add another $1,000 for a differential.

Do you have a breakdown of what parts you need?

$15,000 sounds like an absolute obscenity.

I really dont think i need a new tranny... it just doesnt go into 4th and i was driving around in 4th for a few weeks with no problem so i think it is the sinkro (sp)? and i got a quick quote of 100 bucks.. so the tranny is already out of the car so i think i might pay them to put the rearend back in and the wheels so i can push it on a flat bed to my house so i can do all the work.

Don't see how it could possibly cost $15K to fix just the rear end and tranny. Find another dealership or repair shop and see what they say.

15g's! You can buy a ton of parts for that! In the 48, a tuner would replace your gears and tranny, and still have lots of play money left!

If you do the gears do upgrade 'em to 3.90 or 4.10 and include a hardened output shaft.

Good luck!

You might try contacting EFI Unlimited. They are a Hawaii car club and may be able to direct you to a local shop. The president of the club drives a Z06 (you've probably seen his burnout pic on CF).

Good Luck

It's sad that you are held hostage by the dealers over on the island
