I am thinking of this mod on my Z...I have heard of 4HP to 11HP gains on a stock engine. Anyone out there actually have Dyno#s for this mod thanx
db -- If my Mustang modding days memory serves me correctly, the underdrive pullies are supposed to "free up" HP by running your engine's components (belt-driven pumps and whatnot) more slowly. I believe they do "work," but it's not recommended that you bother running the AC (for example) with the pullies installed.
I'd not bother with underdrive pullies. You can get more power elsewhere without taking the engine's components out of their designed operating ranges.
They will cost you more in batteries or altenator then the gain they give. If you specifically race your car yes if you cruise no. They cannot support your car systems fried two batteries in my car. Always needed a jump start also. This was on brand new batteries and alternator with a factory sound system. Car would quit at stoplights or would not restart after brief wait for me to pay for gas. Basically they suck IMHO.
:nopity
Everybody has an opinion about this issue. I have the ASP pulley on my car, I gained about 13 RWHP & 13 RWTQ after adding it. I drive my car regularly on the street, as well as race it.
In Houston, stuck in traffic, 100+ degree Summer days, A/C on Full blast & Stereo Bumping. If you read my Sig, you will see that my car is making considerable power as well.
I'VE HAD NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.
Do it.
Had the pulleys on my 87. Everything worked just fine including the a/c. only problem was if you let the car idle for long periods under 900rpm the battery would discharge, but it had to be a long time to kill the battery. By the way i had them on my car 15 years and never lost a battery.

I had a crank and alternator pulley on my IROC. I ended up taking the one off the alternator and just running the crank pulley. The car was consistently 0.1-0.13 quicker in the 1/4 mile like this. I couldn't tell you for sure but I believe the battery charge wasn't enough to give the MSD 6AL the voltage it needed. Put the stock crank pulley back on to see if even more spark would be better, but it wasn't. Before taking the alternator pulley back to stock I fried 2 optima batteries trying to keep it charged. I too live in the Houston area. bumper to bumper traffic. Good Luck!
