Default Excessive Brake Dust?

Not a major problem..but I have an 02 with..the stock brake pads {13K] on the odometer...Bought the car new in July 02..the dealer had the rims chromed...which I liked...I`ll polish the {front rims} and maybe 1,2 or 3 short drives and there is grime all over the front rims...

This common? Is this from the pads? If it is I was already thinking about swapping to a different kind of brake pad that doenst squeak...anyone else notice this..?

Just got my Z06 and it has similar mileage (14k). Ive just noticed that the brakes squeek a tad too, and I get the same dust buildup on the front rims.

Ive been told you can switch to a different kind of brake pad..that wont squeak but its a little less effective in braking..Im not a race car driver..so as long as it isnt horrible I would accept that trade off...

get ceramic pads.....no dust or squeek......for track use, though, ceramics are not recommended

an easy solution is to wipe your wheels down more frequently. i'd much rather have the stopping ability than going to a ceramic pad which may or may not perform as well...keeping the wheels cleaner.

just my .02

On my Z06 with stock pads I can drive 20-25 miles and have a heavy layer of brake dust. I ordered some Delco DuraStop ceramics this morning for all four wheels. I've got a friend who just went with ceramics on his 02 WS6 and loves them.

I do clean/polish them frequently...but hell my 80 has wire wheels {chrome} and I dont even have to clean them up a third of the time..and I drive it more..

I wouldnt trade off stopping power just for dirt/squeak if there is really a noticable difference in street driving or occasional hard driving...
but if its splitting hairs, which I suspect it is..I woud give ceramic pads a try..

It is splitting hairs if you're not regularly on the track. Go with the ceramics. I can go weeks now and the rims look great. I could not tell any difference in stopping power on the street.

I was told ceramics are hard on rotors and it was recommended I dont use them with slotted/drilled rotors by the manufacturer of my rotors (I really didnt care one way or the other as brake dust isnt a concern of mine at all). I went with Axxis semi metallic pads and they actually seem to dust alot less than the stock original pads I had on it.

I went to the local auto store and they had a set in stock. I think the fronts were around $70.

I have ceramics on mine and brake pad dust is just not an issue. Sure, they get dusty... after a month of driving though!

I bought my car like that and always wondered if perhaps the stopping power would be greater with the factory pads. But since I don't go to the track all that much, it's no biggie for me!

I'm getting some polished HRE wheels in a couple of days and when I do the wheel swap I think I'm going to change to ceramic pads. I don't take the Z to the track, mainly street driving, and I HATE the dust build up on the OEM wheels. If dust shows up bad on the factory painted Z wheels imagine what the new polished wheels are going to look like. They'll probably look painted after a couple days of driving.
I'll probably go to NAPA for my pads.

Buy the ceramics and your dust - squeking problems are gone. i to had the stock semi metalic and it was rediculous how much they dusted...

GM sells ceramics for the Z - thats what i have on now.

I've run GM ceramics for 2+ years and for street use won't go back. The initial bite isn't as strong as the stock pads but the trade-off is much less dust and no squeeling like a pig rolling up to a light. Overall stopping capabilities is not discernable on the street.

I got mine at GMPartsDirect, it's a very common swap.

For the OEM brake pads this is normal. Great stopping power comes at a cost....brake dust.
