Default cracked windshield

I went for a run on Sunday, caught a rock in the top center of the windshield and now have a crack spreading across the passenger side. Has anyone replaced the hud windshield with a standard windshield? If you have, is there loss in clarity or brightness in the display? I priced windshields today and the hud version costs about 3 times more than the standard one.

Hmm.. I have a spider crack from a rock on my windshield and I'm curious what kind of quotes you've gotten for replacement?

There have been a number of forum members that use a non-HUD windshield with their HUD equipped car. They say the display can be seen just fine.

Default Did not work for me.

I had my 2001 windshield replaced twice last year and they tried to use non-GM spec glass the first two times. The first time they replaced the windshield with a non-hud windshield (trying to increase their profit - insisting it was a HUD unit when it wasn't) - you could read the display, but it was like seeing double.

I made them reorder the correct HUD part number and while it was a HUD unit, it was not up to GM specs (again they were trying to increase their profit by ordering knockoff Mexican Glass). Most of the windshield looked fine, but the HUD display looked wavy - great for headaches. Also the antenna contacts were broken off in shipment and they tried to reattach them locally which did not work.

The third time I made then order the HUD replacement glass directly from the local Chevy Dealership (about twice the cost of their usual skunk-works source). Life is good again - HUD is now clear and sharp!

I should mention that with the non-hud glass you will still get an image - just not maybe as sharp and clear.

You might check these guys out. I have no idea where their glass is made, so I'd be sure and ask.
