All,
I am moving in a week-10 days and need to rent a trailer. I check out uhaul.com and it says my car (01 Z) is too low and can not be towed? I say threads with this before and I had an area planed to get the car higher then the trailer so the ramps would make it almost flat, and clear the front end.
Anyone know of any rental companies that have something that will work? I plugged in 01 Z28 for my rental and that works... and I knew my 3 other F bodies where low but not like this....
Go look at the trailer. I've seen the U-haul car trailers and I don't remember them having any particular problem that would stop you from loading a Z, other than the fact that the ramps are short and the bed is high. I'm sure that's what they are talking about. The way to get around that is to find a spot with the right contour and perhaps add some boards out under the ramps to help level them. Also, if you jack the front end of the trailer up (attached to the hitch on the car, of course -- you'll lift the rear a bit, but no problem), that will help flatten the angle of the ramps as well.
My father has a car hauler that is identical to the U-Haul units -
I recently had to trailer a friends lowered C5 coupe (same issue as a Z06 with loading on the trailer) and we simply used some stout 2"x8" lumber to ease the ramp angle.
There is literally only a couple of inches of spare width, so you must be extremely carefull with lateral positioning.
As stated above, the doors will not open up if the trailer's fenders are positioned as they are on our trailer - so you have to climb out the window or in the case of the coupe, out of the hatch.
I would be tempted to put a winch on my father's trailer if I were going to be hauling many Corvettes.
Being outside of the car with the window down and not being able to open a door is going to make it difficult to put the window back up....perhaps a window valet?
Otherwise, the car trailered great - no problems. You should be able to do it just fine.
I just trailered my 02Z from Birmingham Alabama to Colorado on a U-haul trailer with absolutely no problems at all, either loading it, hauling it or unloading it. The fenders on the trailer fold down, so opening the door is made easy. Really, if your car isnt lowered more than stock, you shouldnt have any troubles.
I have hauled my Z06 on a U-Haul trailer on a couple different occasions in the past.
U-Haul has two different types of car hauler trailers. One is an orange colored trailer the other is a silver galvanized trailer. Be sure and use the galvanized trailer. It is slightly larger and has a quick release removable fender on the drivers side so you can open the door to exit the car easily.
The way I loaded mine was to drive the tow vehicle rear tires up on Rhino Ramps which lowered the rear of the trailer enough to drive the vette on up without any problems
