my friend just picked up a 1982 930 turbo that is built up. It has 450 at the wheels. Lets just say he walked over my basically stock Z. Well my warantee is almost up, so I need to mod...

whats to be surprised about? Its a built up car with 450 to the wheels. Stock Z's have 340-360 to the wheels. This is basic hp/weight stuff. You add a turbo and build up your car too and than see what happens, lol. By the way I used to live in amherst. Graduated from UB. Other than the snow, its a great area.

You shouldn't be disappointed at all. His car, despite crazy power, will be a real handful to drive on the track (road course) unless he's a real pro. 930's are serious cars, but have nowhere near the prowess of the Z06's in the hands of a non-pro driver. The 930 is a real drivers car though, and there is no shame to go down to a serious and highly modified car like that.

Just think, a couple g's in mods and you'll be right back with him, and have a car that is modern, full of creature comforts, and has great style to boot.

No shame in getting pulled by a car with close to 100 more RWHP

heck, I would be interested to see how much things differ at a good HPDE. I think that learning the querky handling habits of the 930 changes when you have 450 hp. I would also be curious to see how things would work out on the top end, I don't know how slippery the 930s are.

What matters isn't what a car can do after it has been modded, but rather, what it provided the driver from the moment you bought it from the showroom. Now if you take both cars when they were introduced, which one do you think would be the winner ??
The new C6 Z is putting out about 450 rwhp also, you wouldn't be shocked if it does what this overpriced bug did, would you?

My remedy to you: You get a turbo also, and you'll see him dissapearing in your rear view.....

The 930 driver would be making a quick and backwards exit off the track if not experienced with that car. The turbo is like a light switch relative to many modern turbocharged cars, and the car demands a lot of skill to make it really go.

That being said, in the hands of a pro driver, 930's are wicked fast at the track.

Any basic s/c ( vortech, paxton, maybe a mag) or turbo (sts) will do the job as long as you can put the power to the pavement. Your buddy will be suprised next time you square up. Just pull $10,000 out of juniors college fund and have a blast.

As much as I love my C5Z - everthing about it... looks, handling, sound - all of it.....

I have to admit that I have always had a secret love afair with early 80s 930s. They just look great. Stupid whale tail and all.

Wouldn't want one as a daily driver, though. My Z is a DD, there's just no way an 80s 930 could be. I have friends and coworkers with 930s and they all say it costs them at least $1000 every time they pull it out of the garage to get it fixed.

If we get him some nurses he might be able to hang with the 930! How many do you need to get before you can get your mods? LOL Just teasing you bud! There is no doubt that 930 can walk the Z, even with a SC or Turbo. The weight of those cars is amazing. Somewhere around 2,700lbs with a full tank of gas. Having said that, 450rwhp will still punish you unless you make your car to beat his P/W ratios. As well, the 930's handle very well, and if it is modded, even better. I too loved these cars since inception. They are certainly *** happy with stock rubber, but if he has changed rubber, and has put the appropriate offset wheel combination on that car, it will be tough to compete with. I love my Z, but I am realistic about what it can do. The 930 is a raw performance car. The Z is more of a happy medium you can drive daily and still have some serious fun with. BTW, has anyone seen the write up for the new Porsche TT? Amazing figures. Nothing wrong with loving your car, but being a car lover is what I believe it is all about.

100 ft lbs torque, less weight is like apples and oranges. No big surprise there.

Not to mention, most of the weight sitting right over the drive wheels.

I have seen some amazing torque curves from turbo charged motors. Nothing beats a big motor when it comes to torque, but you would be shocked at what some of these cars can do. Now that is off the line. If both cars are on the track, we shouldnt even be having this conversation. Power to weight ratios are king no matter H.P or Torque.
