I went down to my local performance shop today and I was asking for some 3.73 gears. So they guy checks out my car and and comes and tells me "Sir you already have 3.73 gears installed." I said what? How is this? Did some C5 Corvettes come with 3.73s or is this some kind of previous owner blessing? I have a 2001 Auto. I bought it used and everything inside the motor appears to be stock. Next thing their gonna tell me is that I have LS6 heads and cam. LOL
Get under the back of the car and look at the GETRAG tag on the differential and see what it says. Maybe they meant 2.73. If you really have 3.73 you are lucky. You can also do a search on how to tell by driving. I think the way you do it is put the car in 3rd and drive 70 or 75mph and the cars rpm's will read the gear ratio. If you have 3.73 you should read 3730rpm on the tach at that speed.
Since 3.73 is not a stock gear, how did he tell "by looking" at your car??? Might want to talk with another performance shop.
The following thread talks about several ways to determine your car's rear axle ratio. Specifically see Mike Mercury's reply (#7) and the link he posted. It explains how you can tell which axle ratio you have by watching the car's RPM:
