Default Oil

I have a 01 vett. I am getting a knock from the engine at idle. It almost sounds like there is not enough oil in there. I check the dip stick and it reads fine. how many quarts do you guys use at a change? I used 5. How about you, Any idea's

Johnny, ya gotta define "knock". How many miles does your engine have on it, etc?

I hear a little noise at idle, too. Apparently it is common, especially when the engine has warmed up. Don't guess with this, man, have a qualified technician listen to it. There are some issues with piston slap in some cars, though GM denies it is a problem. There was a class-action lawsuit somewhere, but my car seems fine, so I don't pay much attention to that.

You've got to give more details...BTW if you read the owners manual I believe it lists closer to 6-7qts when you do a change including the filter.

Also your year had some oil consumption issues, did you have the ring recall performed...?

Both the owner's manual and GM Service Manual say approximately 6.5 quarts with filter. I've found one will use this or a little more, depending on how well the old oil was drained.

Good luck.

Do you have an owner's manual?...I hope you didn't just use 5 quarts with a filter ...It takes 7 quarts with a filter(depending who you ask...some say 6-1/2 )

Your car takes 6.5 quarts of oil at a minimum. Mine shows full with that amount, but some report needing 7 quarts for it to read full. I agree that you should have it looked at to make sure it is nothing serious.

It is a 01 with 75k, i thought it was 5 quarts but not sure i did not do it myself had the dealer do it as I got a freebe in the mail from them. The more i have read it sounds like a piston slap may be. not sure. the dealer told me could be bad rings and said 3k to find out for sure and do the rings. not burning any oil as far as i can tell "no smoke and dont have to add oil between oil changes". I use the mobil one synt.

Thanks Johnny

It could be the filter, too. I once did an oil change and instead of using a Delco filter I used a Fram. Big mistake, apparently. This forum will tell you (rightfully) that the Fram is a junk filter that just doesn't let oil flow correctly. Immeditely after putting it on my car was making that knock at idle. I'm guessing that the "freebee" oil change you got may have included a cheap filter.

I use Mobil1 5W-30 (7 quarts) per the recommendations along with a Delcom UPF44 filter. My car has over 55K on it and it purrs - no knocking. I say stick with the recommended oils - make sure whatever you put in meets or exceeds the GM4718M standard, and a top quality oil filter.

Not all synthetics meet the standard, I know the original Mobil1 does, and I believe that Pennzoil and Quaker State each have new products that are full synthetics that also meet the standard. Further, I believe Amsoil does as well. It really doesn't matter which one you use as long as the oil meets the standard. If it meets the standard, it will say so on the bottle - if it doesn't, don't use it!

I know what goes into my crankcase, because I do my own oil changes. If you take it to a dealer or some other place, and get it done cheap, how do you know what was done, or what kind of filter was used. Some members have reported bringing their own oil and filter to places and having it done that way if performing the oil change yourself is not feasible. The place just charges a minimal fee for the labor.

You got something for nothing, from a dealer no less.
I am guessing they used regular oil and probably only five quarts.
Dealers I have been to charge 75-100 for an oil change on the Vette. If you do it yourself, it cost at least $28 plus tax for the oil alone. then at least 3 for a filter, or ten if you use a k&n.
I would have the oil changed immediatly just for the peace of mind.

Without more of a definition, its hard to diagnose.....it could be a rod knock if its there all the time....piston slap usually quiets down after the engine gets up to operating temperature. Are you sure its not just valve train noise you are hearing?

I have 82,000 miles on my Vert and ALWAYS use Fram filters. I have 133,000 miles on my Silverado and ALWAYS use Fram filters. I have never experienced any problems using Fram filters. I have used them for more then 30 years. If they were JUNK they wouldn't be in business as long as they have been. What is the proper flow rate for a filter? And what is the flow rate of a fram filter? If the flow rate wasn't good enough the oil pressure guage would tell you the incorrect reading.

Honestly, I've always used Fram filters in all my cars for years, too, and never had an issue. That's why it really surprised me 1) to suddenly get that ticking/knock after putting one in the Vette (prior to that change I'd always been having it done at the dealer) and 2) to hear forum members say that Fram filters aren't good. Maybe it's just in the Vette application... I really don't know. But I'll be using a Delco filter for my next oil change and hope that the noise goes away.
