I was driving to a vette bash in NJ. on saturday with a couple of other vettes. We stopped for directions and someone said my vette was smoking. I popped the hood and puff, flames shot up from the bottom of the engine, burning and melting everything in it's path. I grabbed my fire extinguisher from my roll bar and extinguished the fire in 5 seconds. This could have got real ugly fast since the frames where only inches from my akly pump, lines and windshield washer tank full of akly. Turns out the front O2 senser wires came undone and dropped on the headers and started the fire. Moral of this story Everyone should carry a fire extinguisher in there car !
I would also like to thank Mark & Doug From ECS for leaving the party and helping me get my car to the party and then to their shop. I would also like to thank Dave1998 for the hours he spend with me and then driving me home 4 hrs.
One time i had a coolant hose break and poor coolant all over my exhaust manifolds on my camaro. Smoke comin out from under the hood and i thought for sure it was on fire. Luckily it was only the coolant smoking. Ever since then my cars have fire extinguishers in them just in case there is a next time and it is an actual fire.
I was at the bash when someone arrived and said a Forum members Vette had caught fire. Hearing things like this is why I bought an extinguisher 2 yrs ago. Lucky you were prepared I remember Marc and Doug leaving to help someone out.........gotta to love those ECS boys! Good luck with the repairs and hope you managed to have a good time after your misfortune at the bash
Jay,
Jim Dawes (Busted Knuckle) had something similar happen to Janet's Vette. He really stressed the importance of a Halon extinguisher. No residual engine damage. Bought 2 the following week.
Good to have met you and Dave, glad also that the damage wasn't worse.
I'm glad you got it extinguished before it did more damage. I can only imagine what would have happened if you didn't have that extinguisher close by!
When I was driving my 1970 Cuda I used to have one on the floor right in front of the shifter, for times like this. I'm getting one for my Z06 today...

Sure was a good thing that you were prepared for a fire. Glad you were able to get it out quickly and minimize the damage. Best of luck with the repairs.
Glad to hear that you had a fire extinguisher handy. I always carry one in my car. So many people invest $$$ into their cars and never think about getting a fire extinguisher until it's too late.
After witnessing this event first hand, it started out innocent enough with smoke coming from the back of the car, appearing to be from the exhaust. After vette came to a full stop for about 3 seconds, smoke began to come out from under the hood. Upon opening the hood, the inrush of air caused the combustion and there were instant flames. Jay luckily was prepared with the fire extinguisher, which did its job quickly as evidenced by fact car still ran after the fire with unknown damage!
Reality is that without the fire extinguisher, his car would have been gone. Good luck with repairs.
