I just purchased a 1998 vette with 12,000 miles. I was going to take it on a nice cruise over the weekend but I ran into a problem. I was driving for about 20 minutes and all of a sudden the gas gauge went from 3/4 full to empty. The check engine light came on and it said low fuel. I put in more gas and everything was normal for about 20 minutes of driving. Then the gas gauge went back to empty, and check engine light came on. Does anyone have an answer for this problem?
I had that problem last year. I started using a container of Technion every 3,000 miles and the problem has not reoccurred. I also use BP Amoco Ultra as my primary fuel, since Chevron is not available in my area. When I can't find Amoco I go with Sunoco 93.
Deposits can form on the sending units from gasoline with insuffient or ineffective detergent packages.
Try a good fuel system cleaner like Techron of Berrymans Chemtool B-12 or SeaFoam of BG-44K or Valvoline Synpower.
Switch to another brand of gas... www.toptiergas.com
If these don't work repost....
It could be a corroded ground connection or it could be afaulty sending unit.
I had a gas guage problem. I switched to Chevron and also added Techron to the tank. Still had the problem. I saw a post on the forum about clearing the codes. I checked codes and found there was a code set for the fuel guage. I cleared it and all works fine now.
