I got a recall notice on my 01 Z for the column lock and wouldn't you know that this morning the sucker locked up on me! I had already scheduled an appt. for next week to have the replacement part put in. I was able to free up the column after about 10 minutes of cursing and twisting, pulling, etc. Does anybody know of ANYWHERE that I can get my hands on the bypass kit THIS WEEKEND! I live in South Florida and am willing to drive just about anywhere in S. Fla. to get the bypass kit so I can use the car this weekend. HELP! :mad
No scanner available here at home. My car was produced in August of "00" and I took delivery on 10-25-00 at Maroone Chevrolet in Pembroke Pines, FL.
My VIN does NOT fall witihin the sequences posted on the Forum! The recall letter is dated 7-3-01. Have had no more problems with the column lock since the one failure earlier today, although I'm not driving it much and staying close to home until I can get it to the dealer on Tuesday. I think I'll let the dealer install the fix and see what happens. At the first sign of trouble I will put in the bypass kit!
01Z06 - I'd rethink going in for the "recall fix." It's major surgery on the M6, and by all accounts, doesn't always work We installed the bypass on my wife's '01 Z06 fifteen minutes after we pulled into the driveway from a 2400 mile trip home. Personally, I'd just as soon put it behind me, spend the fifty bucks, and get on with my life - knowing that "column lock" is not a problem I have to worry about....
my car was built in october, 00 and picked it up in lake worth but it doesnt matter if it was built before jan, 01... gm said ALL 01s were not affected. something about different design. very interesting that it sounds like gm is quietly expanding the recall AGAIN.
if i get that letter, i will probably take it to lou bachrodt in cocconut creek... i've had good service center experiences there.
but curious to know what the real story is with GM. they have really let this thing go on way too far... as long as there have been firestones on explorers! difference is that no fatalities here, just plain stuck in parking lot situations... it lets them put this issue aside for as long as it has.
This is interesting. You are the only 2001 Z06 with a recall notice that I have heard of and I know people with cars produced before and after your production date.
Sorry, my mistake! The recall notice I got was for my "99" Pewter Coupe that I traded in for my "01" Torch Red Z06. I didn't notice the difference in the VIN until I took the car into the dealer today. I was so pissed about the column lock failure that I forgot to check. When I got the recall letter about a month ago I never gave it a second thought, since the VIN on my 01 did not fall in the sequence numbers posted on the internet, and I had not had any problems with the column lock until the other day. The dealer is replacing the part(s) and I will keep the forum posted. I told the dealer that if the column lock failed again after replacement that I would put in the bypass myself and bill them per their own rate schedule for my time and cost of parts. Good luck to me on trying to collect on that one if it happens! In any case it made me feel a little better to threaten them anyway.
