Hey guys, Im new to this forum... I guess that obvious by looking at my post count...
My boss, the owner of a 2003 Z06, and I did a track event at Thunderhill Raceway this past Friday... His car is stock, for now, except for a 190 degree thermostat... On our way back from the track in 80-90 degree heat, traveling between 65-80 mph he noticed that his temp gauge was running between 190-220 degrees... Around town in 80 degree heat his temp gauge went up to 230 degrees... The question is, do you think the thermostat is bad or are some of you seeing similar temperatures in some of your vehicles? If you wouldnt mind, could some of you guys share some of your temps?

That sounds a bit high! I run about 190 degrees on the freeway... doesn't matter what the ambient temperature is, it stays at 190.. 220 is too high for 65 mph. Around town, the fans are supposed to kick in, so 230 is a bit too much as well. First thing to do is check out and see if there is any debris in front of the radiator.. Our cars are bottom feeders and suck up a ton of junk, plastic bags etc, so get under the car and check the area that feeds air up to the radiator.
Thanks for the info. I will go out and look for any sort of obstruction. We are just trying to figure out the source of the problem without just throwing parts at it. From what I was told the thermostat is a little hidden and not terribly easy to remove so I would hate to do the work for nothing.
Anyone else have any temps they would like to post? Or do any of you others have anything that might help out?

Have you reprogrammed the fans to come on earlier?
I don't believe the thermostat will help unless you reprogram.

With my cars the fans are controlled by a fan switch. Is it the same in the Z06 or do you have to actually reprogram the ECU? IIRC the fans may not kick on but the thermostat will still open...
On the freeway with 80-85 degree outside temp with my stock thermostat I run 185-190 degrees always. If I get on it and make a speed run it goes up to about 210 and then will go back down. Stop and go traffic or around town driving it usually hovers around 195-210 with fans going off and on. If i just turn the A/C on to force the fans to stay on around town the temp stay around 195-200.

Most of the time the temps will float from 190-230. This is normal. In texas during the day, temps are around 210. Its seems hot to most people use to old muscle cars. But it is normal.
I have seen my car go 240+ on 100 degree days while sitting in bumper to bumper traffic.
Best to get an air compressor and blow out the radiator. There is a ton of grass and dirt in there that you can't see.
I just installed a Blackwing intake and my temps seem to run a bit cooler. Driving pretty hard it never went above 194 and usually stays around 190. While idling it went as high as 226 but then started to come down to around 210.
With a stock setup you can run the AC to cool down the temperature. This didn't make sense to me at first either; however, the AC kicks in a 2nd fan and you can watch the temperature drop while your passenger is loving the cold air on a hot day. Great for traffic jams!
