I believe the owner's manual calls for replacement at 30K miles. I know that's what it is for my Avalanche. At 6 years old, I'd say it's time for a replacement.
I was told there is no service interval, and to replace when necessary. I know this sounds nuts, but it is what it is. I ended up having to replace mine @ 45,000 miles cause the damn thing was leaking. Nothing led up to it, it just leaked one day. It then became VERY necessary! If it makes you warm and fuzzy, go to the dealership, grab a filter, familiarize yourself on the install with this forum, and replace it. Otherwise, the filter will eventually leak, telling you to replace.
I have been wondering about replacing mine as well. My '99 just turned 70K, and is running great. Should I just wait until it goes out? and what are some of the signs of a bad fuel filter?
JMO, if that were my car, and I knew at 70K it had never been replaced, I'd probably just do it. I had no signs of a bad filter leading up to the leak. I did, however, miss a beautiful afternoon of riding because the dealer was closed. At least buy one and get it on the shelf!
stopped by the dealer on the way home and picked up a filter. GM is proud of that little puppy! List was $62.32 so with my discount it was $47.88 with tax. I told the parts guy for that price it should have the vette logo on it, and he just smiled.

DropTheTop is correct. For C5s with the non-FFS fuel system, the GM Service Manuals that I have seen read as follows: "There is no service interval for fuel filter replacement. Replace a restricted fuel filter."
With that having been said, it certainly won't hurt anything to change yours and this could save you some problems perhaps sooner than later.
HTH and good luck with the filter.
NOTE: All C5 model years prior to 2003 and model year 2003 C5s built prior to 2003 VIN 35114929 produced on 11/25/02 (so I've read) have the non-FFS fuel system. Later model year 2003 and all 2004 C5s have the redesigned FFS fuel system which was carried over to the C6. For the FFS fuel system, the fuel filter is part of the left fuel sender assembly inside the left fuel tank. The left fuel sender assembly also includes a fuel level sensor, the fuel pump and reservoir assembly, the fuel pump strainer and the primary fuel pressure regulator. There is no service interval for the FFS fuel filter replacement according to the 2003 GM Service Manual. The left fuel sender assembly is replaced as a complete unit and the tank has to be dropped to replace the sender unit assembly. For those interested, you can read more about the redesigned FFS system at the following link:

See my reply above. There is a possibility that your '03 has the redesigned FFS fuel system. For model year 2003 only, you can also tell by looking at the Service Parts Identification (RPO) Label on the inside of the glove box lid. The RPO label will show "FFS" if it has the redesigned system.

Holy crap! Is my filter that much different than yours?!? My dealer only charged me $22 and change! What's the part #? I'll compare it to mine for future reference.

Yes, the filter for your model year '98 is quite a bit different from his model year 2000. There were at least 3 different style filters for the C5s of which I'm aware. For model years '97 and '98, the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator were separate with the fuel pressure regulator up by the engine on the fuel rail and the filter located on the car's driver side frame just in front of the left wheel well. For model years 1999 through 2002 and partway through 2003, the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator were one assembly located on the car's driver side frame just in front of the left wheel well. Then part way through model year 2003 with introduction of the redesigned FFS fuel system (see NOTE in my first reply above), the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator were moved inside the left fuel tank as part of left fuel sender assembly. The following thread also contains more info on the different style c5 fuel filters. It also contains a picture of the fuel filter/pressure regulator assembly used for model years 1999 through 2002 and part way through 2003.
