Default B Pillar Weatherstrip Replacement

I’m replacing the piece of weatherstrip on my 2000 coupe that seals the removable top and body at the rear of the top. I believe that this is referred to as the B pillar. This strip runs the width of the top and down the sides and also seals the windows at the rear vertical runs.

The weatherstrip is sealed with what appears to be black strip caulk (used to seal windshields). The caulk is applied under the strip against the body at the four fastener points (top corner screws and bottom corner pins). This caulk sets up really hard and stiff and I tore the old weatherstrip when removing it. The replacement weatherstrip has the caulk already applied but the quantity doesn’t appear to be as much as what was used on the original installation. GM used a lot of the stuff and it oozed out along the sides of the weatherstrip at several places.

I’m thinking of either using a hair dryer or tar remover to soften the old caulk to remove the excess to clean the surface before installing the new piece. Anyone found a better way to remove the old caulk ? Has anyone found the need to add more caulk than what is already on the replacement weatherstrip, i.e., any leaks after replacement?

Regards,
Dave K.

I just convinced myself that the factory used a combination of the strip caulk and black 3M weatherstrip cement at the fastener locations. The cement is actually what is holding the rubber so tight and was oozing outside the rubber. I need to get a tube of the 3M cement and duplicate how the factory applied it.
