It seems that when i`m on a long trip with the car the fuel gauge will go to 0 when i have plenty of gas, and the low fuel will diplay on the dic. can anyone help with this problem.
I have tried the CHEVRON TECHRON fuel system cleaner, but what I found to really work was a product called SEA FOAM, you can buy it at any autoparts store. I even called the company and spoke to them on how it works and it does a lot more than most system cleaners I have seen.
You probably have a lot of "poop" built up on your fuel sending unit in your gas tank and it is causing faulty readings. The great thing about the SEA FOAM is that you can use it multiple times until things clear up, that is if it isn't a bad sending unit. You may want to start using TOP TIER gasolines, CHEVRON, SHELL and I use Phillips 66, because it is the only place local for me besides SHELL (which I have to drive out of my way to get too).
Hope this helps and I am certain that more folks will chime in.
Very helpful CF member GrayC5 has posted a wonderful list of helpful and informative threads regarding this common bane to the C5. In fact, there exists a number of actual TSB's on this topic from GM. As for myself, I eventually had to have the left fuel pump assembly unit replaced, and, the PCM reflashed. Moreover, I have found that using Chevron premium, versus, other low cost mini-market high sulfur content gasoline brands, AND, also regularly installing a bottle of the Techron II fuel system cleaner, to help tremendously. Since then, I have had no more erratic fuel gauge readings.
I had the same exact problems with my 04 vert. Tried the Techron and it seemed to work for a while until it didn't. I needed a new fuel sensor, a new gas tank and a seal on the other tank.
I am sure that the Techron helps as does the Chevron (not in my area), but I suggest you get the fuel issue checked out throughly as a leaking gas tank seal is nothing to play games with.
This may not be your problem, but it was mine and it could be your's as well. Get it looked at.
I plan to use Chevron premium in mine from now on. It has the techron in it, even though (knock wood), I've had no problems with my fuel indicator thus far. Tried WalMart last night as they've carried the techron additive before, but they were out. I've used a bottle of "fuel injector cleaner" but not sure if this is not just a waste of money.
