Smart man right here. This is discussed over and over, and both sides have arsenals to throw for their side of the argument. The LS1 was designed with longevity and emissions in mind at that temp. Running colder takes longer for the car to reach normal operating temps and thus causes more wear on engine parts. I'm not going any deeper. I will never lower the thermostat on my weekend vehicle or daily driver. Race cars are a different story.
If your stock leave it alone. A cooler TS will not lower the high end temps. If your stock and want to mess with anything-have your fans reprogrammed to come on earlier.
Wowww.. Those 2 links sure provided a lot of info.... it was more like a world war III, but any how... quite informative. I think, I'd be happy with a 180* stat, and lower the fan setting a little. That way, I play safe, in the middle..
I run my car on the track and still have the 195 in it. A low temp thermostat isn't going to keep a car cooler unless you are not pushing it. Once it is pushed the temperature of the cooling system is set by the cooling capacity of the radiator not the thermostat. With a stock radiator and half hour of wide open throttle operation in 90 degree heat the coolant temp will be right at 230. Doesn't matter whether there is a thermostat or not the temp will be the same.

I have a 160 stat and my fans were reset when I had my pcm tuned. My car heats up just as fast as before and the temp stays around 185 all the time. It's a known fact that the LS1 produces the max power at this temp.

I know what you mean! When reading them I had to try filtering out the pissing contest and try to focus more on the technical aspect of the posts, if that's possible.
I wonder if just setting the fans to come on at a lower temperature without even changing the thermostat would accomplish our goal of running a bit cooler?
Personally, if my Z06 stayed at 190 degrees during the summer I'd be more than satisfied. Irregardless of some opinions I don't think temps that run upward of 230 degrees are good for these engines at all. My 1999 Dodge Dakota has a 190 degree thermostat and it stays right there even during the summer months with the A/C on. There's no reason these Vette's can't do the same.
I think I'm gonna stay with OEM stat, but lower the fan setting a little. How does that sound ? SAFE ?
I was thinking the same thing and mentioned it in my last post. I just don't have the equipment or the know-how to reset fans to come on at 200 degrees or so.

If it could be done I'm sure my tuner wouldn't have had me spend $50 for a new stat.
