Just got the word from the stealer that the gas smell I was experiencing was being caused by a failed gasket on the gas tank where the sending unit is installed.
Just my opinion but should this not be the kind of seal that lasts for the life of the car? Or at least until the sending unit needs replaced.
99.675% of the time (I made that up) fuel smells are the result of a leaking fuel filter. The filter is up on the frame rail on the driver side by the tank. Fuel leaking will drip onto the tank shield and drip from a spot that makes you think that it's not the filter leaking. I'd replace the filter first. Not exactly a simple job on a A4, but it can be a DIY if you are handy. I did mine and it took me about 1 1/4 hours total. The filter was $13 The trick is to get the line clips unfastened by hand in the tight space. (no a release tool won't help, there isn't room).Chuck.

I disagree.
I've seen the cross hose between the two tanks break. But the filter is an easy swap and some preventative maintenance anyways.
Also that is just a simple rubber gasket. I guess there's a chance it's leaking, or perhaps has come loose. I would believe that perhaps it never seated right, it is a bit of an odd gasket. If it were to be pinched i could see it leaking.
What year is your car? A new redsigned fuel system was introduced part way through model year 2003.
You really should update your profile with your car's model year, type (coupe, vert, FRC/Z06), mods and any other pertinent information. This would greatly benefit others here when attempting to answer your questions or assist you.
