Colorado is 75 on the Interstates, but alot of people kick it up a smidgeon.......like 85-90! If you go 75 you'll get passed usually like you are standin still! 2 lane highways are still 55-65 legal speed.

New Mexico: 75 MPH speed limits for most interstate zones, AND sections with a 65 MPH MINIMUN speed limit in the left lane and sections with no trucks allowed in the left lane.

Take that left lane bandits.

To make matters worse, drivers are now allowed to drive more consecutive hours w/o mandatory minimum hours of rest. It's not necessarily the drivers fault, trucking companies push them to deliver. Rising fuel costs push drivers to push the limits of safety. It's not about revenue generation...
I understand what you are saying about truckers equipment and hours. However, the issue that was before the Ohio Legialature was decided on the basis of REVENUE - the rural communities were able to keep the bill blocked up in committee because they feared a substantial drop in shared revenue from citations (confirmed by Ohio DOT & Ohio Highway Patrol studies). This was well documented. Even the Ohio Highway Patrol supported the bill!

I have to agree Never see more cops, radar and tickets than Ohio, also the most agrivating state in the union to drive through!
Total disregard for safety in favor of revenue!

In NJ our road surfaces on the interstates suck big time. Can't really do a high speed cruise. Local roads are even worse.

The speed limit in Texas was raised to 80, however it is only on Interstate 10 for a section of lightly traveled road in far west Texas. The speed limit was 75 and the average speed was 79 before it was raised to 80.

I think it is sad that the Germans are so much smarter than us Americans. At least their government thinks so. Our bureaucrats would never allow us to drive at anything approaching autobahn speeds.

I saw this episode on Modern Marvels where they talked about driving on the Autobahn. All the while I kept watching saying, yeah my car could do that. Then this Porsche gets on there and tops out at 212mph!!! And its legal and they have a lower mortality rate on the Autobahn than on American interstates! My jaw about hit the floor. They arrest people for driving in the slow lane or passing on the right. But then again you do have to drop about 2 grand just to get your license in Germany and gas is a mere $8 a gallon. So, I'll take my 75 mph interstate and $3.03 a gallon and be happy.

Being in the Transportation industry for 16 years as a carrier, consultant, and now Director of Transportation for a multi-billion company, everything in your post is either factually wrong, a half-truth or a gross exageration.

For example, legal driving hours were increased by 1 hour from 10 to 11, but mandatory rest hours were also increased by 2 hours from 8 to 10. And the total on-duty time was decreased from 15 hours down to 14 hours. Drivers now have a much less hectic workday now than under the old rules when they could log waiting time at docks as "off duty" and extend their work day indefinitely.

Rising fuel costs would push owner-operators to drive slower not faster. Most major truckload carriers like SWIFT, Schneider, and JB Hunt have their company trucks governed to 65 MPH or less for safety and to reduce fuel consumption.

Commercial vehicles are subject to inspection at every weigh station and put out of service if there is a problem. Carriers are investing in collision avoidance systems, anti-lock brakes, and tire pressure monitoring systems to increase safety.

The overall safety record of the industry is getting better, not worse in recent years.

Sure there are a few trucking companies that don't make safety a priority; however, their days are numbered. In this day and age, insurance companies determine which trucking companies stay in business. If you have a bad safety record, you can't get insurance or it's so expensive you go out of business.

Finally, in your future rants about the trucking industry, you might want to note that the maximum legal weight of a truck is 80,000 pounds not 90,000 pounds.
