Like the idiot that I am, my column had never been serviced. Why I thought it had been taken care of in the past is beyond me. It left me stranded at work the other day. No biggie, I work for Honda, so I got a rental car, and GM is only about a mile up the road. Got it towed. Now the problem.
Like Ive been told before, the dealership must reflash the ECU after fixing the problem. I have a custom tune from Cartek. I asked if instead of the recall, they could just unlock it and remove the pin from the column for me. They said no. I said Ok, just unlock it, and I'll take it to my hometown dealer where I have mechanic friends that will most likely do the work I ask.
However, I'm not 100% sure that they can just remove the pin for me. If so, the guy will most likely have to do it on his free time, away from the dealership. Still not sure on this though, but I dont see why the pin couldnt just be removed. It is what is done in the recall anyhow, I just cant have my ECU reflashed.
If nothing else can be done, what can I do to avoid having to get my ECU reflashed to factory specs? If I get the dealer it is at now to unlock it, and get the CLB installed before it locks again, am I ok? Or do I still need the full recall job to be done. The CLB is going to be on its way tonight most likely. But if I can get the pin removed, then I dont really see the need since it wont be able to lock anyhow. Gimme some help peoples.
From what I have read on the topic, as long as you can get the column to unlock ( the pin does not need to be removed...) you can put in the CLB and it will eliminate future problems.

Get it home into the garage without the dealer touching the car or reflashing. Install the CLB from Corvettes of Houston and you should be done with it.
The dealer is full of it. The new recall (this year) does not require them to reflash the ECU. Read the column lock sticky.
No PCM/BCM reflash in the latest recall 4006C. An older recall for MN6's did that, but since 4006C disables the CL completely (or is supposed to) no reflash is required. Download a copy of 4006C from this site and bring it to him!!!
But, as many have said, if you can get it unlocked, install the CLB ASAP!
