So with all the problems of leaking batteries in C5s, hasn't anyone built a leak proof battery box or tub to contain such leaks if they happen ?
I am thinking along the lines of the battery boxes common in boats that would fit the C5s current battery location. Could be designed in different colors, etc.
Come on.. Lets share ideas. Now tell me what are you thinking of using as a box to begin with. I guess you can cut it down and make it fit that battery area. I'd like to know..

Hmmm,
Just in the thought process at present, haven't taken any measurements.
The ideal solution would be a vented, acid proof battery box that would slide down into the existing vette battery well and then accept the standard wet cell battery.
This would capture any acid leakage and save the wiring and computer from any damage.
Usually boat batteries have top terminals. The leaking occurrs from the side terminals. I am not sure battery boxes would be large enough to hold side terminals. Even if the were, the cables are not long enough to go over the top of these battery boxes.
Use an AGB Battery or switch to top terminal battery.

Using the single example I listed, that box has
Inside dimensions: 11-1/8" x 7-3/4" x 10-1/8"
This would easily hold a side terminal vette battery. The height of the case bottom could be trimmed with a Dremel so that all you had was a open top deep tray for the battery to rest in and to catch in leakage.
But I haven't tried fitting this or checked the mounting issues.
If you get a leak from the terminals, you need a large enough volume between the battery and battery box to hold acid from terminals up in battery. That could be a lot af acid. Plus I would want the battery box to extend over the leak point (side terminals). What if you were parked on a hill, you wouldn't want the drips to miss the battery box.
There is not much room in there for a large battery box.
It's always better to prevent the problem (leaking battery) at it's source than to try to design a backup.

Engineer here.
Funny, with all the engineers in the world a 100% leakproof battery has not been invented

Hence the idea for the box. As to capacity, seems most owners check their engine bays at least weekly....... and would notice sloshing acid. I would think it would take a long time to leak a lot of acid from the types of leaks that C5 owners have seen from their batteries

I put a battery mat under my top post ('04) the day I got it home from the dealership. $2 for cheap insurance. From what I've read here, most, if not all leaks have been on side posts with a small amount of seepage.
Why not : A> get a gel battery, or B> Buy a battery box from Jegs, Summit Racing or any other speed vendor or C> relocate your battery to the trunk?
Gel battery is the simplest fix, IMHO.
A. My battery is almost brand new, the previous owner had just replaced it
B. Gel batts seem to be getting a bad rap on the forum lately
C. Wouldn't want the battery inside with me, I have a coupe.......no trunk
And after all, it is just an idea about a common issue
I read alot about the gel batteries, do you guys really have good luck with them? a good friend of mine thought they were the best, but after having 2 optima yellow tops go bad on him,( 1 a year ) he went back to standard batteries, now I'm taking into consideration his cars get put up for the winter, but he pulls the batteries and brings them in and puts a full charge in them for the winter storage, my stock batteries, I've always just made sure they were charged and then just disconnected them and mine have been lasting fine, I understand you guys down in Florida can drive your Vettes year round and maybe thats the difference, just was wondering how these are getting used compared to his experience.
