I researched it online and found that it eliminates the computer aided gear selection...but I don't really know what that means! Can someone give me a thorough explaination as to how the car benifits from this and what it actually means in terms of performance.
Nothing in terms of performance. CAGS makes you shift from 1st to 4th when accelerating slowly. Its an annotance and a CAGS eliminator is one of the first modififations usually applied to an MN6. It is a real PIA to not be able to stir through the gears as you wish.
I didn't mind the CAGS on my car until I was making a turn one day and needed second gear, but the computer decided I needed fourth instead. I ordered one the next day.
Yeah...the GM engineers apparently put CAGS (computer aided gear selection) to help with gas milage in the city. It would force you to go from 1st to 4th gear when accellerating mildly. It would only kick in basically when in 1st and under 3,000rpm. You wouldn't be allowed to shift into 2nd or 3rd, only allowing 4th.
I have heard that even if the CAGS bypass is installed, the 1 to 4 shift light will still come on. I think I have shifted to 2nd or 3rd when the light came on before with no apparent ill effect so I think a CAGS bypass may have been installed in my Z06 by the previous owner. But does anyone know how to absolutely make sure whether a CAGS bypass has been installed or not?

With the CAGS bypass, the shift light "should" still come on as the bypass just mimics the solenoid.

Hi beetlejuice -
Look under the car at the trans - there is a plug with a wire going into it on the drivers side - if that plug had a "dummy" plug in it and the wiring harness is tied up, then you prbably have the CAGS bypass.
This little harness simply keeps the solenoid from blocking the gate.
My tuner turned off the CAGS by putting one of the variables out of range - it just never triggers now and the light never comes on.
Just another one of myriad reasons to have a good computer tune done IMO.
In simple terms it means "you" want to be in control of your shift points all the time and don't need the Chevrolet Assisted Gear Selection program "helping" you...
Contrary to what some people say about driving it the way you are "supposed to", the eliminator comes in handy in several low speed applications. Get it, you won't regret it.
two approaches,
while in first always appluy more that 30% throttle or buy a cags( or skip shift) eliminator www.corvettesofhouston.com
Actually there are three approaches- two as mentioned above, and the third is to buy a $1 resistor at radio shack, install it in the plug, and put the $19 you saved into more mods!

I disagree. If you can't drive the car without a CAGS eliminator then you probably shouldn't be driving a manual trans.

CAGS Eliminator gets rid of this.
Back in the old days when the Corvette was considered a gas guzzler by the ignorant masses, the Government made GM put the CAGS on the 6 speeds. Or so I'm told. I gotta think GM engineers are much smarter then that. Afterall, they built these wonderful cars, didn't they?

The Government didn't make GM do it. GM did it on their own. This way they wouldn't have to pass along a tax to the consumer, from the Government, because the car would not meet a specific gas mileage rating with CAGS.
... where he had the eliminator installed and then reprogrammed the 1 to 4 shift light to activate at his preferred RPM. He then installed a really bright LED in that area of the cluster. He claimed that he used LS1 edit to reprogram the activation rpm, effectively creating a shift light. I thought that it was pretty slick.
Worth every penny. Simple Installation. The 1-4 shift light comes on but does nothing. You have full control to shift when you want. You will not be forced to shift to 4th at low level accelerations. It makes driving much easier.
