Default What Would You Do??

Here's the deal. Had an '01 coupe. Loved it. Sold it. Sorry I sold it. Bought a '78 Pace Car, 20K miles, mint. Just doesn't do it for me. Been looking at '06 C6's, but prices keep me at the base model. Back to looking at C5's, and if I go this route, I want a Z06. Found an '01 close to me. Nice car.
The question is....1) Go for the Z06 C5 or base model C6?? 2) Will a dealer even consider taking the Pace Car in as a trade? 3) Any cheap attorney's out there because my wife will want a divorce regardless of what path I choose.

Z06 C5 would be my choice, find a nice clean low mileage car.

Get what you can afford , IMHO No need working for a car payment.

As far as the wife goes, eah!! She'll get over it.

Go for the used Z. Same power, better looks(IMO), and can be modded to beat a base C6 for less dough. I went from a C4 to a 02 Z and can't be happier. A dealer will "take" your car in on trade, but don't expect a lotta money. Your better off selling it privately. Good luck with your descision!

Get a '02 or newer (low mileage if possible) ZO6. The C6 is a great car (I am one of the few to say so), but they haven't proven themselves as the C5 models have. Just keep looking and take your time.

Now, while you are doing this, I recommend selling your PACE CAR as a private sale. The dealership is not going to give you much for this car.

This is my opnion and you will get many of them. Good luck my friend.

If you have to sell the '78, sell it yourself rather than trading it to a dealer who is going to give you as little $s as possible. Good luck with the decision.

Thanks guys. I was leaning towards the C5 anyway. Selling the Pace Car privately will be such a hassle. That was one of the reasons I was going for a dealer trade/sale. From what I gather, sales are down a bit. Add the the '07 factor, and I was thinking I could wheel 'n' deal on the '06 dealio.
Keep your thoughts coming. I'm still in the "what the "F' am I doing stage."

Well I can tell you I drove a C6 Z51 and it just didn't do it for me. It almost seemed to refined and less like a corvette than I would like. That isn't saying anything bad about the car but it just wasn't for me. I think you should just take a day and go test drive both and then I am sure your decision will be crystal clear. Good luck

I would be surprised if a dealer gave you $10,000 trade in for your PC. Put it on a couple, ($50.00-100.00 in fees), of the Corvettes for sale sites. I bet you can get AT LEAST $17,000-20,000 for it. I tried to sell my '78 PC locally, I finally found a speciality Corvette dealer to sell mine on consignment. I didn't have a computer at the time. I got within a $1000.00 of my asking price.

I have a torch red C5 once a week i go too a different dealer and look to trade for C6 each time I like the look of my C5 better and so do all my friends. I find the C5's sold out when they were new but dealers seem to be struggling selling their C6s unless its a z06 and they have to ask way over sticker to compensate for the C6 they would be willing to discount. THATS MY 2 CENTS

Keep the PC and buy the C5. They are not making any more of either. If you get the C6 you will take a depreciation hit of more than the pace car when you cross the curb. My 2 cents. Remember advice is only worth what it costs.

I understand your thoughts on the hassle...traditional methods of selling cars are cumbersome and a hassle. I used to hate it...

Now I sell my cars on eBay when it's time to let them go. I find that I don't have to answer very many questions if I just fairly describe the condition of the car and include a couple of dozen photos. I've sold many cars over the last several years on eBay and it's the easiest way. I usually price the starting bid at the absolute minimum I'd take for it. Not a number I'd be happy with, but you get the idea. Then put a buy it now where you think it's worth. More often than not, I've sold my cars on the first listing, and the whole thing, start to end is only about 2 weeks.

It will make thousands of dollars difference on your car, maybe $5-10k difference.

Of course, if you decide that's not for you, at least go trade it in at a vette specialty shop. They will be more fair on the trade, but their car prices are usually higher (but often for good reason as the cars are pristine and low mileage). This would probably let you get a much nicer car for the same money.

get the C5 coupe...you'll have room to play and won't stress as much about having to pay for it. Plus then there is more room to 'grow' if you want to add power

Go for the Z if you can find a very nice one. And , you'd probably be better off selling the 78 yourself.

I'd wait a year, sell the 78 by owner, and then purchased a used C6.

That's a tough one.... the 78 Pace Car is the Vette I fell in love with when I was a kid. I built a 1/8th scale model that sat on my bedroom dresser for years where I gazed at it for endless hours. I agree with the other posters that you should either try to the PC yourself or trade it in to a vette dealer. Kerbeck has some amazing prices right now on C6's.... Z51s for just over $40K!. CorvetteMikeNewEngland is asking $40K for an L82 Pace Car that's got a few hundred miles on it. You really have something unique, but it's definitely not a daily driver. Why not keep the PC and pick up an older C5 for $20 - $25K? You might stretch the budget, but it seems a sin to give away the Pace Car on a trade.
