Cats or no Cats?
For those of you who eliminated your catalytic converters, how do you get the car past inspection or is your car "off-road" only and you don't need to get it inspected?
Thanks
John
So they pass without cats?
In NJ, my inspection printout said: catalytic converter status: ready...
They don't pass anything cause there's no test to take period. On a federal level cats aren't to be tampered with - however, w/o ANY kind of testing required (visual, sniffer or otherwise) there is no way for them to get caught or in trouble!

We have "collector" plates in OH that eliminate the checks.
Where I live all they do is scan your computer for any trouble codes. I have 02 sims which make the computer think the cats are still there. Also there is no visual inspection here.
If your state still makes you run the dyno your gonna have to put the cats back on for the test.

.. i have the 02 sims as well ..
however FL has no inspections so .. no issues here.

I was told last night that NJ has a visual inspection of cats. If they are not there the inspection station could get in a ton of trouble if they pass you even without codes.
Unless you have a forced induction engine, I just cannot see the point of removing catalytic converters. I do see the point of getting some nice high flow aftermarket ones. Keep in mind that I'm coming from the world of forced induction, and have a lot of experience with owning "off road only" setups. I am buying a Corvette partially to get away from this extreme nuisance and federal offense.

I was getting ready to do headers/hi-flow cats and x pipe when I went for a ride with a friend of mine who took off his cats and I couldn't believe how much better his car sounded. He knows how much I liked it so now everytime he drives by my house, he lets me know it!
As for my intentions with this car, I am on a slow road to performance mods, a little here - a little there. If there is really not that much difference between hi-flow and none, I will probably just get the hi-flow cats so I have no troubles with inspection as the car is also a daily driver. And yes, I do believe that NJ will do a visual inspection, but it is random. I think the last time I got the car inspected the guy was too lazy to try to get under the car to inspect and the mirror pole did not give him a good view so when the codes passed- he didn't bother with the visual. It all depends on who is there any given day.

it only takes one person to look and then you are SOL....
Something else to keep in mind is that states are gradually adopting stricter emissions testing guidelines. I believe some of the NorthEastern states have already moved towards California standards, and I think that more states are planning to do so. For those of us who live in "lax" states regarding emissions, that time may be drawing to a close.
