I test drove a one owner 02 vette with 7000mi today (private sale). The car looked like new. We drove about 5mi and got into town, and a low oil message came up, it still had good pressure. The owner told me that when sitting in traffic the oil level will drop a little and the message will come up. He said he adds a little when that happens. Is this normal? He takes it to the dealler twice a year and has the oil changed. The car is in great shape, but that kinda scared me off. Thanks!
Happens to me sometimes too. Can be due to parking facing uphill. Has also happened right after an oil change when I *know* the right amount of oil has gone into the sump - it seems the sensor is overly, uh, sensitive?
Bottom line - if the car is what you want go ahead and buy it and you can fix the small ****ly things afterward.
No, I didn't ckeck the dip stick. I thought of that on the way home. Wish I would have. I kept and eye on the oil pressure and it never went down any. I'm not sure what to do.
This is what happened to me when I got mine last year.(2k coupe) Like in your case the previous owner had his oil changed by the dealer. What I found out, through the forum, was some dealers only put 5 quarts of oil in, when our cars should take 7. If I remember correctly someone on the forum stated you will get that message (low oil) between 4 & 41/2 quarts. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. So all I did was check the dip stick and top off til full. No problems ever since. I still have a dealer do my oil changes, but I tell them to fill with 7 quarts. Hope this helps.
I thought it was just late 2000 and 2001 that had oil consumption problems?
Depends on when his car was built. Some early 2002's could have gotten some of the 2001 motors. The easy way to check is to pull out battery and look at dates on the little white tag of the connectors behind the battery.
