I just got the 97 back from having the hood painted. I took the hood off and took it to the body shop and had the car under a car cover for about 3 weeks. Today I got the hood back, bolted it back on and started to drive the car. The air blew cold for about 1 minute then warm/hot only. I checked the pressure on the low side and when I first put the pressure gauge on it, it shows low. When I charge it then it immedietly says that it has too much (red zone) and it seems that there is excess pressure on it when I pull the hose off. I checked the DIC codes and there is nothing on there. Anybody have any suggestions on where to start?
I can tell you that if you keep trying hit-or-miss messing with those stupid gages, you'll be in for a much larger repair bill than you expected, when in all probability it's something very simple that a shop with proper HVAC equipment can quickly locate and either diagnose and or fix, properly.
Spend a $100 +/- now for a proper qualified fix, or $1000, $2000 or more if you keep shoving R134a into it.
Why would I say this if it had not happened to me, luckily not on my vette, but my kids car! An overcharge of the system acutally subjects it to compressor failure more so than undercharged..........
It sounds like the refill kit fitting to the low side is not completely depressing the schrader valve and all you are doing is pressurizing the refill hose.
Seat the fitting on the low presssure valve by pushing the fitting onto the low pressure valve to make certian you are actually reading the system pressure on the low pressure side. Also helps if you have someone in the car bring the rpm up to 1000 and hold it to get a better idea of system pressure. If this doesn't get the results you are looking for.... spend the money to have the dealer evacuate and refill the system. Averge cost is $150. Takes all the guesswork out of it.
Mine sometimes acts up, but I have noticed that when the car is cold (engine) the car acts strange, however, when the car is at normal opt temperature, the AC works like a champ, but that is not something that happens all the time.
I do have a great idea...two windows down at 55 is great AC for me and could be for you.
