Default Question about TPS's

Anyone know if the stock wagon wheel TPS's will fit on '03 z06 speedlines? I'm swapping my setup for this and need to know if my TPS will work.

I am not familiar with those wheels, but I would think they would fit. I bought new wheels for my car and the old TPS worked just fine in my new wheels. Just make sure your tire guy puts the sensors in the correct wheels, ie. left front sensor on the left front wheel, right front on the right front...etc. Otherwise you will have to retrain them. Good luck!

Thanks guys. FYI - the wheels are stock z06 from '01 - '04. Mine came off of a '03.

My tire guy just called me and said that the sensors are not fitting correctly - the tires won't take any air. Someone mentioned changing the rubber grommet but did not say to what size. Anyone??

There is no way that you can install the sensors and not have them take air, especially on stock corvette rims.

Are you sure that Z06 rims are not aftermarket? Some aftermarket wheels will not accept TPS's. You need to clamp them and glue them inside these wheels.

BTW, if these TPS's are original to the car, they are nearing the end of their life. You might want to buy new ones now.

What he told me was that the tire would not fit over the original sensor and that it would not inflate (Firestone Wide Ovals in stock z06 sizes). So on a hunch he went to a Chevy dealer and purchased the newer model from '01 - '04 which I guess is smaller. He stated that the newer model fit perfectly on the OEM '03 z06 rims, the tire fits and takes air. It looks like I have to get new sensors which is $200 more plus all the added labor that I will get hit with.........

The newer style sensor is indeed smaller - but it will not work with a '97-'00 car at all.

The older style sensors will work in a Z06 wheel.

This is getting frustrating....OK, so the newer sensors won't work on a '98, why? HOW do you get the original sensors to work on '03 z06 rim? This guy is telling me he can't get the tire to fit over the sensor and seat correctly so that it will take air. I all appreciate the help....

Good news. He figured out how to get the original sensors installed. More to follow!

The PCM and the TPM's were changed in '01 with the introduction of the Z06 - which did not have TPM (tire pressure monitors). As a result - the PCM (powertrain control module) on '01 and newer cars allowed someone with a TechII device to turn off the TPM system. The TPM on the newer cars also communicated with the BCM (body control module) less frequently. They are half the size, and the work differently than the older style monitors. With the older style monitors - you have to drive the car a short distance in order to get them to transmit information, whereas the newer style monitors start transmitting as soon as the vehicle is started.

I know you should ALWAYS have cover sheets on your TPS reports.....didn't you get the memo?

Default New Wheels

I gotta say I was nervous with all this TPM/TPS talk today. My guy came through. He figured out that if you leave the sensors loose while mounting the tires, you can tighten/fill with air as you go. I got goose bumps on my arms when I pulled up to the shop and saw her parked outside. I know they are just z06 wheels but IMO, they really compliment my Vette. I think I made the right choice here. Thanks to everybody for your expertise. FYI, the tires are 265/40WR-17 & 295/35WR-18 Firestone Firehawk Wide Ovals - much improved ride. Peace!
