I've been looking for my first C5 for several months and prices so far have been pretty consistent. I've been focusing mainly on 2000 - 2002. I'm being patient since I don't reallly need one immediately.
I know you guys probably watch the price fluctuations of C5s year after year. When will the prices start dropping? If I have to wait until Oct or Nov to see any significant drop, I might as well get one now, no?
Generally speaking more in the fall and winter months depending on where you live. For now it seems you wont touch a low mileage mint condition C5 vette for under $20,000 (this goes for 97 and 98's as well. For a 97-99 expect to pay low to mid 20's.
Usually in the October-Jan time frame due to winter - but in CA, they may not drop much.
Location is irrelevant to me. I'll go to Bangor, Maine to get one if the price is right. Although driving it back home in the dead of winter would be an interesting experience.
Sounds like prices in the northern states will start dropping around Sept/Oct?
22-25k for any low milage c5 is a deal. These cars are awesome and you will not find anything that will get you more attention and more fun than a c5 vette. Hell, you could spend 20K on a new v-6 mazda and wonder what the "xxxx' you just did...The only reason these cars sell for such a low price is because the market is flooded with them. I remember when a c4 vette sold for over 20k with low milage and it won't touch a c5...
I picked mine up in late November and it was definetely a buyers market......I saved a couple of $$$'s.
I also purchased mine after the C6 was out for a couple of months, private party and in Ohio, and that in combination with picking up in November saved me some $$$'s.
Think of it this way, you can get one now, or wait a little and get one that is even better!!!
I found that off-season pricing started in August, and continued through November. Too early, and you have to search harder for the deals. Too late, and some folks just put them away until spring. Good luck!
I bought my '02 about a year ago from PA. Had it shipped to CA. I couldn't find the car I wanted here and I saved about $3000.00 over the prices here in Los Angeles.
You nailed it! The C5 is way better looking than the C6 and the Cars movie really pointed out that goofy smiley face view from the front. And as the "investers" have taken away the pre-1972 performance vehicles from the "car guys" (not to mention that the C5's are twice the car of the C123's) I don't see the C5's falling in price much EVER.
Asking about prices dropping.....you should clarify that. Used prices are certainly regional and seasonal. You can't get the same money for a Harley in December that you can in May, especially when you are talking the northeastern states region.
I bought my used 2000 FRC two years ago this month for 25k even. Bought it from a Ford dealer in my locality of northwestern Pennsylvania. At the time of purchase the car had only 23,000 miles on it. Vette had the polished aluminum wheels, HUD, Blose, and the dual zone air.
Winters are the pits here. It's basically cold 9 months out of the year. If we have a nice September we're lucky. So, my point is, if you want to save money on a used C5 you're best off looking in the upper Peninsula of Michigan, North Dakota, northern edge of PA and northwards, i.e. NY, MASS, Maine, etc.
Two years later I have 18,000 more miles on the FRC. I've done a few mods to it including the FROST KING from front to rear. I STILL can get 25k for it. Wouldn't take less either. The car is Torch Red and I have NEVER had people respond to a vehicle the way they do to this vehicle.
Winter is coming. Start looking on the 'net at car classifieds of newspapers like the Buffalo Evening News, Erie Times-News, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. You just may find the deal you 're looking for.
