I have a 2001 auto that shifts from park to drive, but won't shift from drive to park.
So far we've traced the problem to the Park Neutral Position (PNP)switch on the tranny. The switch can be moved manually and is functional. However, there does not seem to be a lot of tension on the shift cable that controls the switch position. The shift cable pulls the PNP switch forward when the shift control mechanism is in the 1st gear position. But the PNP switch stays forward when the shift control mechanism is in the park position. The PNP switch should move to the rear position.
Does anyone have practical knowledge with the PNP switch and how it's controlled (shift cable and floor shift control mechanism)?
What I'm looking at now is replacing the cable that runs between the auto gear shift and the PNP switch. This cable is known as the shift control cable in the service manual.
Has anyone ever replaced or had a shift control cable replaced?
Call Rodney at RPM, they are a supporting vendor, I am sure they have the parts and know how to get you back up and running.
Thanks for the suggestion. The problem is that this is my daily driver and the wife needs her car right now, so I don't have time to wait for parts to be shipped. I'm hoping to have it back together by today.
I might have to get one of those some day. So you just bump that shifter forward and reverse to shift?
Thanks for the picture of your tranny (reincarnation23-1.jpg). Your park neutral position (PNP) switch is labeled, while the stock one is not. I didn't realize the park position was so far to right. I manipulated that switch by hand so I could start my car. I guess was in neutral, not park, when I started it.
I'm sure you're been told this a lot, but you have one sweet setup on Grond.

Thanks! The shifter is a full ratchet shifter - like on a sports bike. The shifter itself does not move more than 1/2 an inch either direction. I can slam through the gears now and never miss a shift. And I shift all the time.
Regarding the cam gear on the tranny : I marked it with a silver paint pen, it's not stock. It's the only way to set up the custom shifter.
Here is a better pic

The shifter cable has been replaced, tunnel plate reinstalled, and exhaust reassembled. Took the car for a spin and its running great. Total cost for repairs: $110. Now I just need to reassemble the interior, but I think I'll attempt to fix those LED's on the HVAC control unit first.
EnglandGreen: Thanks again for the help. Your last picture made it possible to calibrate the shift control cable correctly on the first try.
I would have posted this in the thread you referenced, but it was closed...
My HVAC display ended up being the same style as yours. The display works great now.
