Default Transmission Question

I have a 03 ZO6 with 23,000 miles. I just put in a new RPS Stage 3 dual friction clutch with the alum. flywheel. Everthing is new, bolts, pilot bearing, slave, drill out mods, remote bleeder, Motul DOT 4 fluid and pedal stop. The clutch works flawlessly, no chatter and just a little stiffer pedal than stock.

I have installed many clutches in my day and have two questions related to this install which are new to me.

1. I have 50 miles on it and when I shut it off I have a slight clutch smell until it cools off, will this go away? I plan to take it easy for about 500 miles before I hammer on it.

2.Here is the wierd part, at idle there is a rattle in the transmission now. When I depress the clutch, the rattle goes away. I did not touch anything else in the drive train. The only thing I did was change the tranny fluid and put Amsoil ATF in the tranny while it was out of the car. The old fluid looked fairly good but did need changing and did not see any metal shavings. INPUT ANYONE? Thanks, Don

im sure the smell is just the clutch breaking in. but not 100% sure. as for the rattle, almost everyone with a stock z06 has the rattle with the cluth out. its pretty normal to us

Interesting you should mention that. I got a new rattle when I changed my ATF to Redline synthetic a week ago. Sounded like a loose exhaust clamp under the passender seat. I was a bit bummed out about it at the time but it's gone now.

I was hoping it was related to having had the car up on stands for the first time and would settle out. That may well have been the case?

I believe strange transient noises happen in all vehicles. You just hear it more in some than others. Motorcycles are the absolute worst for this sort of torture! Since there is no sound deadener in the Z you're going to hear everything just like on a bike.

I'm in the habit of ignoring new noises lest I go nuts... Or maybe I'm already there

I would guess it's your flywheel. All light weight flywheels make a slight chatter sound. It's just the way it is.

I agree. Most of us have gotten into the habit of depressing the clutch when we shut off the engine. If you leave it out it really rattles. Its just the nature of the beast.
