2005 Most Stolen Vehicle List Shows Preference For Hondas
August 8, 2006

According to CCC Information Services Inc.’s 2005 most stolen vehicle report, just slightly more than one of every 200 registered 2001 BMW M Roadsters was stolen last year, making it 2005’s most stolen vehicle. Filling out the top three are the 1998 Acura Integra and 2004 Mercury Marauder. A technology provider to the automotive claims and collision repair industries, CCC processes more than 1 million automotive claims-related transactions each day, resulting in an extensive database of vehicle information. The company identifies the most-stolen vehicles by analyzing total loss claims it receives from more than 350 property and casualty insurers in North America and reviewing only those vehicles whose theft has resulted in a total loss.
CCC then compares its stolen-vehicle data against vehicle registration volume information provided by R. L. Polk & Co. to determine the rate of theft as a percentage of registered vehicles. The vehicle with the highest theft percentage is deemed the year’s most stolen vehicle.

2001 BMW M3 Roadster
"We can’t say exactly why they were stolen, but some details point to interesting trends contained within the list of the top 25 most stolen cars of 2005," said Mary Jo Prigge, CCC’s president of Operations. "For instance, our data suggest some cars are stolen for the value of their parts, which may explain why we often see a ‘clustering’ effect with same make and model vehicles from sequential model years. The data also point to a high proportion of stolen cars that are built for speed, such as the BMW M Roadster, the Audi S4, the supercharged Jaguar XJR and the Mercury Marauder, all of which appear on the top 25 most stolen vehicles list in 2005."

The pattern of ‘clustering’ most frequently occurs with upper midsize cars like the Acura Integra, which accounts for eight of the top 25 most stolen vehicles. The Integra, along with the Suzuki Aerio (positions 12 and 13 on the list), are also part of a trend among what is commonly referred to as ‘tuner’ cars. These cars are popular with street racers, who look for vehicles packing a powerful motor in a lightweight and efficient package.

What was the source for the list that included the Corvette? Every list I have seen made no mention of the Vette in the top 10 of stolen cars. Also, what years were the cars on the list? Not a good sign if the Corvette is moving up on the list.

Haven't seen the vette on the list in a while. Don't show that list to your insurance company.

Based on that list I should lock up the Avalanche and leave the vette outside...

I would be curious as to the source of the list as well. In Arizona (and I'll bet in Texas, New Mexico and California as well) - pickup trucks are usually at the top of the lists. Most of them wind up in either parts or whole south of the border, unrecoverable......

I've never seen the Corvette listed.
