Also it seems the clutch smell permeates and lingers more than other smells. You will notice it in and out of the car. It's not a strong or particullarly foul odor, but it does hang around.

Based on all the non-descript gibberish above... I would say don't rule out the clutch.

I agree, I really think it is a clutch smell. What does that mean, the stock clutch is almost 90 k old, does this mean that it will start to slip soon...

99magredcoupe:

Have you looked at the exhaust/headers (see my post on P1 of this post) to see if there is a plastic bag (probably melted by this time that is causing your issue?

I did a quick visual from the back and from the engine down after reading your post here at work- I will jack up the car tonight based on your post and take a better look. Thanks

Been racking my brain to figure out how to describe the odor of a slipping clutch. Then it dawned on me...

Go to the bank and withdraw $1,300 in small bills go out to the parking lot place them in a crumpled pile and set it on fire. Take a good whiff and remember that smell!

Look at the rear end, around the exhaust, it might be the famous rear end seal starting to leak, and diff. fluid getting on the exhaust. Most probably the driver's side

Its located behind the intake manifold, near the firewall. Can't really see it without removing the manifold. With a flashlight you can look down next to the firewall at the exhaust. Maybe able to see oil on the pipe. Mine was on the drivers side. My mechanic knew where to look.

Only difficulty in replacing is you must remove, or at least move forward the intake manifold to access it.

Sorry for delay in responding.
